Today we’d like to introduce you to Rajanee Darensbourg.
Rajanee, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
To begin with, I started off as a basketball player, the WNBA was my dream. I worked hard at it and made sure I was eligible to play every season by buckling down on academics. I worked at Popeyes all throughout High school and College to not only pay for my basketball expenses but to also learn discipline by assisting my parents in paying bills. Fast forward to the end of my college career and my stats weren’t where they needed to be to receive a pass to the next level, so I walked away gracefully and was met with motherhood while employed at Grossmont Dermatology.
This job was so much of a safety net for my new and growing family that any aspirations outside of that 9-5 was obsolete. Well, after three years of dedication to that job, we parted ways and I was now a full-time mom. By the beginning of 2020, the pandemic was in full swing and I was on child number two and worried about the financial future of my family. With the extra time on my hands being that everything was shut down, I begin looking into the logistics of starting a business starting with what niche I’d pursue. Then there was the illuminating idea of how essential it is for women to look their best at all times, pandemic or not. I scaled the industry for all hair suppliers in my general area and that’s how I gaged my price line and inventory. There should be no reason for a woman to choose between her bills and her beauty, so I made sure not only will a Bag Of Bundles be affordable during a financial crisis but it will always be affordable.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it hasn’t, the road to shifting your energy and entire being from a customer to being the one selling the product is hard in and of itself. You name your price at a place where you’d still profit but you realize how much of inflation suppliers put on their products and as a customer, you’d never get that knowledge. Also it’s a harsh reality selling something as essential as hair, the reason being is you see people you know that buys the same product you’re selling go to the bigger hair companies for the same product at almost double the price. It helps you weave out business connections from personal connections fast.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bag Of Bundles story. Tell us more about the business.
B.O.B is a hair company where we pride ourselves in our inventory. The hair is not only affordable but also luxurious, thick, bouncy and soft. To distinguish my brand from any other brand of hair, I made sure to set my prices at points that my competitors would deem laughable. On average, one bundle of any length and texture would normally start at $75-$100 but our bundles start as low as $55. You pay less per bundle when you purchase more than one. To emphasize on luxury, I took my time with branding and packaging. My logo is a cartoon woman of African descent wearing a B.O.B. The bundles themselves are packaged in a net that is then fastened safely in a plastic pack then organized neatly in hand crafted box with the logo around it. Accompanying the bundles will also be a bonnet to preserve the hair once you begin wearing it.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
None. I strongly believe in hard work and perseverance. Every success or failure is a stepping stone to the next point in your life. Learning responsibilities early in life made it easier to accept them when they came in the form of children when I got older.
