Meet Raquel Mittman of PrintPost

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel Mittman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Raquel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Our family-run printing company has been in business for the past 32 years. With the advent of desktop publishing in the mid 80’s, we were able to provide design and printing services to our small community in Ramona. As printing technology advanced, we moved into full-color digital printing and opened our second location in El Cajon to service our East County customer base.

Like other small print shops around the country, we faced the downturn in print demand and had to expand our services. We decided to invest in wide format printers and sign making equipment at our El Cajon location. Five years ago, we entered into the garment decorating industry offering embroidery and direct to garment printing at our Ramona location. With these new products, we have recreated our business as a one-stop shop for our customers.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When we decided to enter into the sign making and garment decorating industries, we had to relearn the ins and outs that each demanded. Luckily, we were not intimidated about learning new things! Although we are well versed in printing on paper, vinyl, and fabric are different beasts altogether!

We had to learn about these new products, materials and the different printing techniques for each. We had to find new suppliers and quality products. There were times, especially under deadlines, that were very difficult to overcome when the equipment would not work correctly or there was operator error because of an oversight.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about PrintPost – what should we know?
We are a full-service graphics company and pride ourselves for creating quality products at reasonable prices. Since we do all our work in-house, we can help our clients optimize their jobs. Anything that goes out our door is a reflection of the work we do, so we make sure to check customer files BEFORE we print.

We provide graphic design services to individuals needing marketing help, logo design, photographic editing and layout designs. Our primary business is printing on paper creating business cards, flyers, brochures, carbonless forms and newsletters. We also work with the USPS in their Every Door Direct Marketing program (EDDM) which provides low-cost direct mailers to specific postal routes. In our wide format department, we create banners, indoor and outdoor signs, magnetic signs, and posters. We also create decals and product labels.

On the garment side, we offer Direct to Garment (DTG) printing which allows for very detailed prints. Another method of decorating is Heat Printed decals. This is a full-color lightweight substrate that lends itself to a low-temperature application for heat sensitive items like moisture wicking sportswear or can coozies. We also embroider onto hats, shirts, towels, etc.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that our success has been based on the ability to be flexible and open to new ideas. This has lead to some very interesting developments in making our production more efficient. For example, we took a ruler from the quilting industry and created a new measuring and cutting tool which is now for sale by the German-based Yellow Tools company called the “Mittman Ruler”.

We also took one of their cutting tools and made some adjustments to it and it is also now available in their catalog. We also make sure we get to industry conferences and trade shows to make sure we are up on the latest changing technologies.
