Today we’d like to introduce you to Reed Kinsey
Hi Reed, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The love of hockey started at the age of 4 after watching my uncle play in a late night adult league game. Watching guys skate on ice with super sharp blades, and using tall wooden sticks to score goals was absolutely intriguing to me. shortly after, I was able to suit up with my own rec. hockey team. After a few years of playing I was able to convince my parents in letting me become a goaltender. Playing many years at competitive levels from the age 10-20 years, it finally came time to make the ultimate decision on wether I keep persuing a dream as a professional hockey goaltender, or going to school to start the “real world”. The real world it was….. which took a different path than I originally anticipated. I was approached by a few hockey dads that had goaltenders in the Jr Gulls youth orginization that knew I was back home for good. They asked if I would coach there kids in goaltending. After doing a few lessons with their kids, more parents started to ask for their son or daughter to have lessons. With the help of my hockey mentors I was able to create a business out of doing something I loved playing growing up.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Covid-19 was a bit of a hiccup. Covid ended up shutting our home rink of Escondido Iceplex down for good which was very disappointing for the hockey community. Having the two rinks down for many months with zero rent being able to be generated was the final reason of the closure. During that time I needed to adjust my training to make sure I still had all the young athletes staying active and off their couches. I ended up starting a “off-ice training” zoom workout three times a week with the goaltenders. I would have 15-30 kids on each training going for 1.5 hours. during covid I also became a vendor for a hockey company selling & shipping synthetic ice to customers in southern California.

RK Goalies is a Ice Hockey goaltending school that specializes in Camps, semi private & private training. RK Goalies also works with youth organization’s such as the JR Gulls, and Fairmont Prep MS. High schools teams including Pacific Ridge HS, and Fairmont Prep HS. we also take great pride in running high intensity training sessions, as well as summer and winter camps. Our goal is to give this athletes every opportunity they can get to become the best goaltender they want to be. We also have some of the best staff working with the students. Our staff our current athletes playing at high levels and pros who know what it takes to get to the next level and share their knowledge to the younger generation.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I am born and raised in San Diego, what isn’t there to love. Living away for many year playing hockey made me realize how lucky I was living in San Diego with the amusement parks, sports, beaches, and the best food. Very fortunate to have been raised here. The only thing that could take me away is a professional job opportunity that would be stupid to pass on.
