Today we’d like to introduce you to René Romero Schuler.
Hi René Romero, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I paint almost every single day, and I have since the late 80’s. I’ve never had another “job”. It took a little time to reach a point where my art paid my bills, but my tenacity keeps me going every single day. I now show with eleven galleries around the United States and Paris, and have several assistants to help keep my practice steady.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a professional artist is absolutely not for the faint of heart. The stumbles and roadblocks along the way have all but devastated me at times, but tenacity and faith in the integrity of what I do have steadied my path very step of the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an abstract figurative painter with a focus on the feminine. My oil paintings are all created by sculpting the thick layers in an impasto technique and creating figures that at first glance are pretty and sweet, but on closer examination are actually made up of all the texture, depth, scars and imperfections of what we all are inherently made of. I am most known for my oil paintings, however, I have several related, though distinctly different bodies of work.
All of the work that I create speaks to the complexity of all that makes us who we are, and the importance of seeing beauty within ourselves- not despite our flaws and imperfections, but BECAUSE of them.
