Today we’d like to introduce you to Reva Subra.
Reva, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My education-training is in Clinical Psychology, I was working in a children’s hospital as a psychologist, conducting parents educational groups, early interventions with infants born premature or with special challenges, would take joy in giving talks, lectures on role of “education” in dealing with children who are challenged cognitively or physically or emotionally. Enjoyed working with special needs families, population.
Fate intervened and I had to discontinue for I became a parent of a child with special needs.
Initially nothing made sense, all my training, education was of no help to accept, comprehend that I have a child who has challenges at multiple levels, premature with less than 50% chance of survival. That for any parent is painful to digest. Then having to look at myself as a mother and counselor seemed like a “Cosmic joke”
Then, I got into survival mode, everyday trying to ‘educate’ myself n as a mother, began meeting other mothers with special needs children, slowly the healing began by talking, expressing, sharing and listening to other parents. In time, started making my own groups, built support system, started small to eventually to founding a nonprofit in San diego called ‘UPforCause”
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been pretty smooth. Everyday we make a conscious choice to stay positive, count on what all our special children ‘CAN DO” then move forward, build on that..
So, as you know, we’re impressed with UPforCause – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
