Meet RFX1

Today we’d like to introduce you to RFX1 .

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My story begins ten years ago when I first discovered that there was more to reality and our understanding of it. It all started when I became obsessed with astrology and numerology, which began to show me a new pathway into my destiny. Signs began to pop up everywhere, especially number sequences. I was bombarded on a daily and hourly basis. I thought I was losing my mind at first. I dug myself into some rabbit hole, I thought. But I kept learning and learning about metaphysical and spiritual topics while I was attending ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, CA. I realized I wasn’t just a student of illustration, but I was a student of the universe. Even after I graduated, I was still not done learning and exploring about the universe, and I understood my journey to accomplish my mission would be a long one. And I am still on it.

Please tell us about your art.
My work involves many types of materials, mainly acrylic, holographic material, and resin. I have been working on murals, which is a way to communicate a message to the community.

Everything I have learned along the way has begun to inspire and merge with my work. Also, I incorporate everything else that I am interested in, such as music and video games.

I’m heavily inspired by electronic music, which can be obvious in my work.

I also want to send out a message through my works, and hope to inspire a future generation of artists and designers. But I also want to talk about mental health awareness through my work, and the message can be found throughout. As the character I created, OperatorBoy is on a mission, but he crash-landed on some planet (a metaphor for hitting bottom). He is alone, in solitude. He is a metaphor for anyone who has ever felt a disconnect in their own realities. As we are more connected than ever through the use of technology, we still feel so isolated.

But I want to remind people that we are never truly alone, as angels and spirits are always beside us, guiding us, and protecting us. That is what I came to realize what the signs and numbers were. They are angels or spirits trying to guide me towards my destiny, purpose, and soul mission. And now I want to do the same for others.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
It has become a lot easier for artists to gain exposure without galleries or agents. Social media also has allowed artists to sell their work easily and directly to the buyer, as agents and galleries can take up to 50% commission. This makes art to be so overpriced.

I still think artists struggle, and struggle is important for an artist to create soulful art. It is about grit and persevering through that struggle to make it to the end goal. Not giving up is so important as an artist, because it is a long journey. And that’s what my art is also about, finding the light within the darkness or at the end of the tunnel.

Cities like San Diego have definitely been improving the arts in recent years. And public art is popping up everywhere! I would like to definitely see more murals, and I hope to do one for the city of SD in the near future! If someone is reading this, please hire me to beautify your city! As anything can help artists to thrive, but it really is buying our work or paying us for our work that will truly support us. Many people want work for free from us, and they do not understand that we need to pay our bills and eat also. And sometimes doing murals can be dangerous, depending on the size of the wall. Some artists get injured doing a mural for free, and it can be discouraging to some artists starting out. So please, support your local artist by paying them.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am based in Los Angeles, and people can see my work online, fairs/galleries, and public art/murals. I have murals in San Fernando Valley, Downtown LA, Koreatown, Anaheim, and soon Long Beach. But that will slowly spread throughout California and the rest of the world. RFX1 is coming to a city near you!

People can support my work by following me on Instagram: @rfx.one! Also, it gives people the chance to directly communicate with me and buy my work directly through me. And any support for mental health awareness would be greatly appreciated!
