Today we’d like to introduce you to Ric Morrison.
Ric, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been creating ever since I was a young pup. I always gravitated towards color and music. In high school I felt safest in my art classes I helped do a mural in the high school cafeteria, and the confidence I got from that was rehabilitating. When I turned 21 I started painting every single day and I didn’t have a job but somehow started paying my bills off my creations. Since then it’s just escalated I’ve done over 15 art shows. Including RAWartists and other local San Diego and Riverside shows. I have done two more murals after the one from high school. And I’ve completed a number of commissions as well as having some pieces in local shops. I’m slowly moving back into the world of music. But the people who know my name know of my very wide variety of visual and functional art.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My first struggle as a kid was being very introverted and shy. I didn’t make a lot of friends when I was a kid so Art was my best friend. It wasn’t until the end of high school that I found out that money wasn’t going to be my friend either a lot of my art supplies were and are hand me downs. When I was 19 I started painting under the street lamps at night because it was the most space I had. I lived in my car for a few months and painted in parking lots in downtown San Diego. When I was 21 I started painting every day to try to make ends meet. And no matter how little I’ve had I’ve always had the world with my creations. I’ve seen what drugs and guns can do to a person on multiple different occasions and the only thing truly stable in my life is the ability to create from nothing. My Mother, my Nana and my Aunt Sabrina, and about a handful of others have always supported me in my dreams but more than most said I needed to focus on something “more important” so I continue to do what I love to prove that in the end, only the things that make you happy are important.
Please tell us about your company.
Cosmic Arts is a healing company that I’ve created to help my community realize their dreams, as well as “heal through color” I specialize in acrylic paintings but do a wide variety of work including spray paint, color pencils and graphite, authentic Native American functional pieces and some other pagan sculptures and items.
I am most proud of my “intention pieces” where I put healing energy into my work to help my clients with whatever specific need they are looking for. What sets me apart from others is the true magic held in all my works. My subject matter focuses on the natural and spiritual life and helps offer peace from within. I Manipulate color into energy and wrap it around your soul to heal Mother Earth and raise your vibrations. I go where I’m needed to shine light where it seems dark.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was five my Nana gave me a briefcase full of all her paints. When I was 18 my aunt Sabrina let me try to sell my art at her flower shop I worked at. But my most favorite memories of all time was probably going to vans warped tour and seeing all the different people come together for one purpose, it didn’t matter who any of us were it was like a giant family. And we all gathered for one thing, our love of music our love of passion. The energy there was always uplifting and family like. There might have been a few thousand people there but the energy was all one.
