So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a transplant from Providence RI, moved here 5 years ago, for better weather and a change of scenery. I have been an entrepreneur since tending bar in college. My 3rd business was a dance club in Providence opened in 2004. using that experience I looked into the bar business since I arrived in so cal and took over the venue in late 2015 which had been called Morena club since the 1960’s. After learning more about the history of the building, which housed a mechanic shop next to a tow lot in the 1950’s the Clutch theme was developed. The goal was to have a clean dive bar where we remember your name while serving craft cocktails and drafts with low prices in a chill environment.
Has it been a smooth road?
Small business has its hurtles initially cleaning out of the old bar and making improvements so that customers are comfortable proved more work than expected. Then building up a clientele that may have been apprehensive of the previous establishment was a challenge but we have thankfully developed a nice amount of regulars.
Also, offering NFL on Sunday mornings without a kitchen has been a challenge but thankfully customers can access a food truck outside most of the time we are open or now have access numerous dishes from Uber eats within 30 minutes.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is growing and it seems every week a new customer walks into the bar from another part of the country. With the climate and proximity to the ocean It’s a popular destination for vacationing and relocation. San Diego is a great place to relocate to and start a business. We look forward to the new trolley line from old town to UTC and the new station within walking distance of the bar.

- Happy hour 3p to 7p Monday to Friday $1 of everything. Wells $4 Dafts $3 to $6
- Pabst 16 ounce can and a Jameson shot $8 all the time
