Meet Roberta Glisson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberta Glisson.

Roberta, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for photography started many years ago with a 35mm camera and a darkroom. Although in those early years, I never thought that it would lead to the business I have today. After majoring in art in college, I worked in advertising and graphic design. Feeling stifled by the corporate constraints in those jobs, I continued to paint and make mixed media art during my spare time.

Later, I became a stay-at-home mom, and after a few years, I decided it was time to go back to work. This time, I was determined to start my own business. I didn’t want to make commercial art. I wanted to make something more personal, something with more emotion. This was the beginning of Roberta Nicole Photography.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge for me was learning how to run a business. Most of my day is not spent shooting or even editing, photos. I spend much of my time dealing with issues related to invoicing, contracts, taxes, insurance, budget, advertising, connecting with other wedding vendors, location scouting, creating timelines, holding client consultations and planning meetings, etc. I’ve had to learn how to create and follow a consistent workflow for each job. While it was overwhelming in the beginning, I enjoy the business aspect of my job now. It makes me feel empowered and productive.

Please tell us about your business.
Roberta Nicole Photography specializes in weddings and elopements in Southern California, as well as worldwide destinations. Whether my client is local to San Diego or lives in another part of the world, I spend time getting to know my couples so that I can tell their story in an authentic way. Connecting with clients and building their trust is crucial in allowing them to open up to me as well. My goal is to evoke emotion through my images, not just to make a pretty picture. I also like to disappear on a wedding day and become a quiet observer. If I can capture the tears of the mother-of-the-bride or a groom’s nervous sigh, for instance, that can be very gratifying.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
This year has brought about many opportunities for travel as I have added destination weddings and elopements to my offerings. I’ve recently shot weddings and sessions in Northern California, Italy, England, and Ireland, with more travel destinations planned for next year!
