Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Morabito.
Ron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started V Group when I moved to California in 2007 from New York. I owned a similar business in NY and sold it before I moved to CA. We have two distinct divisions. One being a full service signage & printing branch, and the other custom cabinetry and woodwork. The idea was based on a lot of businesses needing signage and display cases. As we have grown, the cabinet division has expanded to residential projects as well as commercial. We have been very fortunate in San Diego to work with some great people and businesses. Some of our clients include The San Diego Padres, SDSU, The San Diego Gulls and Barona Resort & Casino to name a few. On the signage front we produce everything from banners and wall murals, to illuminated signs, trade show displays, backdrops and the like. On the cabinet end it commercial side it can be full cabinetry build out of casinos, restaurants and offices, to residential kitchens, baths and more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I feel all businesses face challenges, the key is learning and adapting as they come. Most recently, like many other companies, the Covid-19 Pandemic created some challenges for us. We do a lot with sports teams and at the moment most sports are not happening. That was a significant drop off in revenue. I sat and thought first off, what can we do to help people right now. I came up with the idea of printing up over 1,000 banners that said OPEN FOR TAKEOUT. We donated them to local restaurants in San Diego, and other parts of Southern California. The concept went over so well that other brands wanted to sponsor the banners. We would put their logo with the words Donated by. That led to the creation of adoptabanner.com. Where businesses or people can sponsor banners to donate to restaurants and other essential businesses. As a result, we ended up with many new restaurant and hotel clients. It felt good to help out in a time of need, and it’s nice to gain new clients as well.
V Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We have two divisions. One being signage and print, and the other custom cabinetry and woodworking. That sets us a part in the way we can be a single source solution. For example, you’re opening a retail store. You need a sign out front, graphics on the wall, display cases, cabinets for merchandise. We can provide all of that turn key. One stop. The divisions work together to make sure all is delivered in the correct order, and on time. From design, manufacturing to install we have you covered. As far as what I’m most proud of I’d say our charity work. We donate a lot of signage to charities. We have worked with Big Brother’s Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs, and The Huntington’s Disease Foundation to name a few. I’ve also put together various charity events as well. We always donate the signs, gather prizes from our clients and have an auction. The charities get all the money we raise. I serve on the board of The San Diego Sports Association. It’s a great group of people, and they do a lot of good for the community through sports.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I truly enjoy what I do, we have many clients that have become great friends. To me success is taking care of my clients, my team, my family and my friends. I love going to a Padre game and seeing signs we have made, or a restaurant seeing a bar we built out while eating dinner. Of course, as a business owner I have goals, and when we hit those goals it’s a great feeling. I’m am very grateful to San Diego on a personal and business level. It’s been very good me.
