Meet Rosie Alchalel of Good Hair Day

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosie Alchalel.

Rosie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I joined a teen entrepreneurship program. Whatever it Takes (WIT), in the August of last year, just in time for the new school year. Through this program, I was successfully able to launch my own nonprofit organization, Good Hair Day. I have gotten to where I am today by way of dedication, persistence, and the resources that WIT has provided.

In order to fundraise for my project, I sold hairbrushes with the Good Hair Day logo on them. This not only helped fund all of our events, but it also raised awareness and served as a way for my community to get involved.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. My job is to organize events for the less fortunate where they can get free haircuts, and it results in me becoming the middleman between the different shelters and hairstylists. It is very difficult to find hairstylists to donate their time, but the ones who do volunteer always want to come back and do it again.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is a nonprofit organization that aims to give free haircuts to the less fortunate. This looks like different events where hairstylists visit different shelters and give free haircuts.

A lot of people have asked me, “well, why haircuts?” and it is simple. A good haircut has an immediate change to your entire person, and when you look good, you feel good. Our ultimate goal is to spread confidence and positivity.

What sets us apart from others is that we work hand in hand with different shelters and aren’t completely separate from them.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I think San Diego has worked very well for me. I think that San Diego works very well because of its unique size. It is big enough where there is room for change, but still small enough in the sense where there is still some ideas under the sun. (meaning that there is still an abundance of ideas that haven’t been pursued). I don’t know if I would necessarily recommend them, just because I don’t know what it’s like to start a business anywhere else.
