Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxanne Barba.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started drawing when I was about 9 years old, I was a latch-key kid from a broken home being raised by my amazing single father. I needed something to fill my time, what started as a hobby soon became an addiction and it consumed all my time. I would draw in my notebook throughout class then come home and watch Bob Ross trying to recreate his landscapes with Crayola markers. Drawing became my escape from the world, in my art I can create my own world. As I got older and I got my first job I spent all my money on art supplies branching out into new mediums, new opportunities to expand my worlds. That’s still true today, there’s just endless possibilities.
Please tell us about your art.
That’s a heck of a question. Let’s see, my art is a wide array of subject matter on a wide array of mediums, haha, because I like to experiment. So far I have gotten my hands into oils, acrylics, watercolors, markers, pencils, dotwork, geometric work, woodburning, paper art, stenciling, and claymation. I tend to favor geometric dotwork done with marker. There’s still a lot I’d like to try, but I kind of just fell into the mediums that I have tried.
My Inspiration comes from so many places and it can invoke silly pieces like my psychedelic gnome Gerome and serious pieces like my series “#emotionless” which was inspired by a tough break up and turned into a series where I just share how I’m feeling and hoping others can relate. But, my favorite ways to find inspiration is to explore the outdoors – I’m trying to visit as many national parks as I can this year – and talking to people, I like to collaborate with other minds and draw from the stories I haven’t lived to create something.
I hope when people see my work they take away from it whatever they need in that moment from getting a laugh or not feeling alone. I just want them to relate however they need to in that moment. You should know my artwork is on inconsistent mediums with semi – consistent subject matter because your girl loves her some series pieces!
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Slide into them DM’s, son! Find an artist you like on a social media platform and reach out, compliment their work, spark a conversation. I’ve connected with artist all over world because I message them or they message me. You might even find a fellow artist nearby!. I’m in the process of building an e-commerce site, hopefully that will be up and running soon!
