Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruben Arcega.
Hi Ruben, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi everyone
My name is Coach Ruben. I was born and raised in San Diego, California graduated at Kearny High School, and went to Mesa College.
During my childhood and teenage years, I was exposed to playing sports football, basketball, baseball, boxing. I was 16 years old and I started working out at a gym called The Boxing Club located on Convoy St. I workouts there got to know the staff and the trainers. As time went by there, I got a job as their janitor.
I fell in love with the fitness industry and learned how to open and close the gym. When pontential new members walked in for the first time I’ve learned how to walk them through an intro and offer them membership, class packages, and everything else we had to offer.
A couple of years went by, and I remember One day, one of the trainers couldn’t make it to his 12 pm power boxing class no other trainer was in the gym at the time, and they asked if I could fill in for him. I was nervous even though I knew most of the members taking class.
During the time being a janitor, I observed how classes were being taught from start to finish; as I was wiping down the equipment folding the towels for the gym, I used to hear the trainers yell out different drills and combinations on the bag.
The Class started; some of the members where excited others were questioning why am I teaching because I was a janitor. I warmed up the class and got to work; we were on the boxing bags doing different combinations running around the building, doing different circuits. At the end of class everyone was sweating and said, “You killed me great workout” “I love the change up they need to have you teach classes more.”
That same day my manager walked up to me and said “Thank you for covering for one of our trainers I heard everyone who took class loved it you should really consider becoming a Certified Personal Trainer so you can teach here.
I attended The National Council on Strength & Fitness and became a Certified Personal Trainer. I wanted to further my education during the time I was putting my hours in as a personal trainer and became a Sport Nutrition Specialist and a Certified Strength Coach which took me 7 attempts to pass the test, I was determined.
My first few years as a Trainer I was bouncing around different gyms in San Diego teaching classes doing personal training and also traveling to clients’ houses.
Now how Fitnetic Fitness started was when the pandemic hit back in 2020 and shut down all the gyms I worked at. I had a good following throughout San Diego and was asked if I was running classes at the beach or if there a place where we can go and workout. At the time I wasn’t doing any classes at the beach do to everything being closed but I still was able to train my private client at their house.
One day I was standing on my driveway looking into my garage brainstorming trying to visualize what I can do to with the space I had. I walked through my garage into my backyard at the time was just grass and dirt, not much cement to run classes. I was looking around trying to visualize an outdoor gym with boxing bags.
I had the space to make a private gym where all my clients can come and feel safe to workout during the shutdown. It was outdoor and at the time wasn’t going to be that many people taking class, so we wouldn’t be breaking any kind of rules or laws.
My wife April and I demoed out our garage and backyard hired a company called Foundation Flooring Co. where they did our garage floor epoxy, laid out cement in the backyard, and built a retaining wall
Fitnetic Fitness was created I now have a place to be able to train all my clients and members, fast forward 3yrs later we offer memberships, class packages, personal training, and online. We have classes Monday through Friday that are strength & Conditioning, HIIT Boxing Classes, and open gym.
I have built such a great community that everyone feels like family when they are here at Fitnetic Fitness.
I’ve been very fortunate to be able to know a lot of great individuals that have built their business from the ground up and have even provided me advice on how business works.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The obstacles I face during the time of me working for other gyms were your typical issue everyone faces during their career as a Personal Trainer. Are my clients going to cancel? Are they going to resign with me? Did my class go smoothly? Are the members taking my class really enjoy it. All of these issues always occurred no matter what gym I was working at.
Owning a private gym that is located at your house is something that can be scary difficult especially when you have family wife, and kids. Being a 1 man running a business has its pros and cons trying to balance out your family time, making sure you are there for your 3 children that are growing up so fast, and wife that is managing everything else while you’re trying to build something is the most challenging most difficult thing I have ever put myself through but I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fitnetic Fitness?
