Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruben Lew.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in Tijuana, a pretty normal life but since very early age started gaining interest in ancient and primitive cultures, particularly body adornments like tattoos and more specifically body piercing.
Around the age of 15, I started piercing friends from high school and around that time it quickly started to become my biggest passion.
When I finished high school, pretty much as soon as I turned 18, I left home to pursue a formal career in body piercing.
Things quickly escalated quite rapidly and by 19 I was already working with some of the most known piercers in Mexico in the most reputable shops. This was in Mexico City, around 2005, to give some perspective.
Since then I’ve been traveling and working alongside some of the best and most well-known piercers in the industry, around the world.
In 2012 my career took a bit of a turn, and since I’ve been also teaching different classes, seminars and workshops for different organizations in various countries. As a matter of fact, in April this year, I’m teaching in Spain.
But the most satisfying moment in my career so far was coming back to Tijuana in 2014, after ten whole years, and being able to offer a safe services with proper industry standard jewelry to my community.
I still enjoy traveling from time to time, but I mostly prefer being home and taking advantage of how beautiful Baja is, spending time with my family, my partner, and our pets.
Please tell us about your art.
Well, body piercing is considered by many more of a technical skill, and I can definitely see why. But in the last few years, clients are coming to me to help them design their ears with beautiful jewelry and placing it in such way that accentuates their natural anatomy.
That is where the art or creation part comes into play.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I actually just recently started a podcast, where I talk to people who are taking a plunge into living of their passions and what they all have in common is exactly that, passion.
When you truly pursue your passion, without any expectations, and fully commit to doing your work, things just have a way to sort themselves out.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The most artistic aspect of the whole process, you could say, is the actual photo of the finished product, and that’s where Instagram comes into play. That is where you can see my work.
