Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Mayer.
Ruth’s more than 65-year professional Artist career has taken her to distant places on the globe, painting virtually hundreds of works. When not traveling painting capturing great moments of history and events, Ruth can be found in her California home studio, or her favorite haunt in her gallery on Catalina Island 26 miles across the sea from her Dana Point home. Among her distinctions during her career, she received the prestigious “American Masters” Award from the “Hubbard Museum” in 1991. Ruth was also presented with a Key to the city of Las Vegas, and her own name day by proclamation of the Mayor’s Office for her 8′ painting titled “Las Vegas”. The painting sold for $100,000. in 1985.
Ruth – an Artist by birth she will tell you, is known for her multitudes of diverse painting styles, whose scope of interests knows no bounds. First time visitors to Ruth Mayer Galleries, are startled to learn the body of work is one artist, ranging from Cityscapes, Portraits, Surrealism, Realism, Abstract, Impressionism, Fantasy, Landscapes, Seascapes, Sports. Her repertoire is virtually limitless. A highly unusual character to possess in a world intent on assigning an identity niche to all things in the digital age. Clearly Ruth Mayer commands her freedom, to explore, and interpret the experiences of life on her own terms. She earned a Master’s Degree in Art History, that undoubtedly left its mark upon her imagination. Ruth’s Signature Characteristics – her Subliminal Imagery.
Is a Signature characteristic of her work. Ruth also paints herself in her paintings, although not always visibly obvious to the viewer. Another mark of Ruth’s work is painting Images within images, as naturally as when we were children seeing images in the clouds, her childlike nature has never left her, and only become more subliminal. You never know when Angels are looking upon you through her work.
Children have always been a delight in Ruth’s life, and are her Other Passion. She raised ten in all, including adopted. Children are an endless story in her art, in themes as diverse as the imaginations of children themselves. Paintings. As a child, raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota on her father’s fourteen-thousand-acre ranch. She knew how to ride bareback on her horse standing on its back at a full gallop, like the wind. You can feel the wind in your face yourself in the paintings of Ruth Mayer. In her you she met Visitors to her father’s ranch included Robert Frost, Dwight Eisenhower, and went to the Bull fights with her father and Pablo Picasso. The colorful cast whom she interfaced with in those times of youth carved their memories in the vivid imagination of the young artist Ruth.
An inner light has always shown in Ruth’s work. Many have remarked “I wonder if she uses something to make her paint glow” … while somewhat humorous, nothing could ever substitute for the glory of beauty itself, in whom the eye of the beholder finds itself lavishly bathed in the light of the imagination of life as it is painted in the wonder of Ruth.

As a Publisher, Ruth Mayer Publications has always been prominent at the cutting edge of technology producing the finest reproductions in the world. Some of her prominent Published Editions are;
1997 – “Hong Kong” – a Fait Accompli commemorating the change of sovereignty from Great Britain to China after a 150-year history of governance by the Crown. 2000 “I Love New York”- her first Cityscape for the New Millennium. Completed June 2000 … the Great Angel embracing the sky behind the World Trade Towers, was present in the original work when it was completed. Little did anyone know how deep the vision of this work ran, to becoming a National Monument to the honor of innocence everlasting … arising out of the same innocence of spirit it was painted in.
2002 – “Tournament of Roses” – Commissioned by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses for its 100th Anniversary Rose Bowl Game, and 113th Tournament of Roses event, celebrating the oldest parade tradition in American history. Three years in the works, the artist was taken to experience the annals of the Tournament history in all its array. Unveiled at the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena California on the eve of the upcoming new year. The theme for the year was named “Good Times”, an irony in view of the event of 9/11 shortly before. The theme was unchanged in the American Spirit.
Song of a Beautiful Soul
2004 – “Pope John Paul II” – Inspired by the work of “I Love New York”, the priest said “we have traveled from Rome representing the Vatican, “we were directed by God to have you paint this Pope”, will you accept the commission to paint his Holiness Pope John Paul II”. The finished painting was unveiled for the Pope in November 2004 – he greeted Ruth with a great smile, and recognized her as she entered the great room from his previous meetings with her several months prior. He laughed with her as she showed him as he was as a boy, and a babe in his mother’s arms, rewarding her with a Blessing, and a Thumb’s Up. The painting was dedicated to raising funds for children most in need.
2006 – “Jerusalem” – Seven years in progress, the artist visited the Mideast in 2000 … a barrage upon the senses … history upon history upon history, stones upon stones upon stones … the place of the story of stories. Seeing is to believing as believing is to the Gladness of the eyes.
Welcome to the Fine Art of American Master Ruth Mayer.
Please tell us about your art.
Through Art we see who we are amidst creation.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I can’t imagine being lonely as an Artist. I’ve been far too busy creating to have time for such thought, although having raised 10 children while pursuing my visions, loneliness is rather inconceivable.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have two Galleries, Laguna Beach, California going on 45 years, and Avalon Catalina Island since 2002. My Art may be viewed, and purchased at either, also viewable online at www.ruthmayer.com.
