Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabria Bradley.
Hi Sabria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
At the age of 18, I was working at a day spa. I became very close with the nail technicians in the spa. One of the techs told me about a program to that would assist in paying in your beauty school tuition. At that age, I was not sure on what I wanted to do as a career. I applied for the assistance and they accepted my application. A few months later, I was attending Je’Boutique beauty school (now known as Bellus Academy). It wasn’t until I started school that I fell in love with the craft and to my surprise, I was good at it. However, I had a few bumps on the road of life and I didn’t go and take my state board exams until 2013 (pretty much 13 years later). Once I was officially licensed, I began working independently with a family member. I kind of just jumped in there and really didn’t know anything about self-employment. So that lasted about a year and then I went back into the corporate world so that I could have a stable income and learn more about how to run a business. While I was working my nine to five, I was still taking the clients that I had gained on the weekends at my house. I stayed at my corporate job for about two years and I just couldn’t do it anymore. I missed being a nail tech full time. So then, I decided to work at a nail salon until I was ready to start my business again. And here I am. I promised myself that I would never stop doing what I loved.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
People think that being an entrepreneur is so easy. Some may even think that since you make your own schedule, you have all the free time in the world. The reality to that is if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. As an entrepreneur, you don’t get sick time and vacation time. My biggest challenge in this business has been this COVID pandemic. Having to be closed, worrying about how I would pay rent at my studio and at home when I was unable to work. Even when we were allowed to re-open business was still at a standstill. Some weeks I would be busy and the next, I would be super slow. There was definitely times that I was not sure if I was going to be able to stay in business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a nail technician who specializes in natural nail care. For me, it’s much more than making your nails look nice with cool nail art. I want to make sure that we are using the best products on your nails and educate you on how to care for your nails in between our appointments.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
There are quite a few apps and vlogs that I enjoy. I use these as learning tools and also at times gain inspiration from them. One in particular is The Meticulous Manicurist on YouTube.
