Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Cyrus.
Sabrina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up as an artist and a musician, I was constantly told that I would never make enough money. I would never be famous, and I would never be happy. I heard it so many times that I really felt destined for failure. It didn’t matter what I achieved, I always felt like my next try would end in disappointment.
I turned to the internet for help and diagnosed my symptoms over and over. Treatment was always a little exercise and therapy. So I started a fitness program with a personal trainer, lost 20lbs, and still felt hopeless. Therapists diagnosed me with depression, anxiety, and ADHD. So I tried medication for a while. It helped with the panic attacks, but always feeling exhausted and constantly withdrawing while we changed medications was a nightmare. I found myself in a hospital by my second year of college. I had given up on being a burden, given up on trying to make anything of myself.
I was inpatient at a treatment center for 30 days and spent another 60 days in outpatient care. I found a community of broken people who loved more deeply and honestly than I’ve ever felt.
Without the insurance I had, I would’ve never been able to afford the care I received. Every individual we lose to suicide is too many. The resources exist to help people, they just need a space to be implemented. I wanted to share what saved my life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was bullied from middle school through high school. I had milk thrown at my clothes, dirt thrown in my face, and called a lesbian for having short hair. People told me I was fat, threw my backpack into trash cans, and told I should not wear heels because I was too tall.
I had to learn how to balance my work/life balance by having no life outside of work. I worked multiple jobs, slept in my car, and never got to see my family.
Once I was taught self-love, I learned to value my body and my time. I learned to set healthy boundaries. I am free to enjoy a life I can actually mark the art and music I love. I get to help people and feel good in my own skin. It hasn’t come without hard work, but the life I live because of it is priceless.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Healthy people get to enjoy life and foster incredible relationships. Before learning how to manage my mental health, I didn’t feel like my lonely life was worth living. I tried to take my life away from my family, friends, and community. Each person is created with a unique talent and personal experience. Taking a vital piece out of the puzzle ruins an incredible team. My goal is to educate my communities so they can give back with their unique hearts and minds.
The current climate of society does not value rest. After experiencing the benefits of just 5-10 minutes of meditation, I learned to value rest and mindfulness. People cant reach their full potential if they’re burnt out from pushing themselves to their limit and not taking time to recover. How can people treat others, or even themselves with kindness, if we’re exhausted?
Once we have been able to manage our work and our rest, we will be able to do the most exciting work. My 30 Day journey gives the opportunity to learn about ourselves, capitalize on our strengths, and learn to enjoy their individual experience. People crave purpose and connection, and I have put together the teachings of the most successful communities and rolled it into a package I can deliver to those who need it.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to creating both online communities and in-person meetup groups. Sharing face-to-face can be a difficult step, but it’s one of the most healing moments. Getting support in real life, being vulnerable, and feeling that acceptance and nurturing is such an incredible and necessary experience.
I’d love to see mental health education on campuses. Teaching stress management, respect, and CBT basics.
