Meet Salim Khalfan of Pro COAT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salim Khalfan.

Salim, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Tanzania and came back in 1973 to study Engineering. I worked at Northrop University on a Rockwell Space Shuttle Program. Got my degrees in Aerospace Engineering and MBA. Worked for Technetics in El Cajon for 20 years as VP Quality and then Marketing Manager. Left the Company in 1999 when it was bought out by a large corporation. Worked for several companies from 2000-2003.

I decided to form my own Company in 2004 when there was an opportunity and found out that there is a need for conformal coating of the Electronics and Aerospace assemblies that are used in various areas of space technologies, medical devices, military and commercial applications.

We are the only Company in San Diego that does this kind of work.

Has it been a smooth road?
As usual in any business, there is never a smooth road. Always obstacles and winding roads to tackle especially when you are a minority. However, it made me more stronger in my determination to succeed. Started with only five employees and now we are 35 employees and growing with the customer all over US and Canada.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is very unique. we do conformal coating, staking, potting, underfill, encapsulation for Aerospace and Electronics assemblies. The application ensures that the assemblies will operate at their optimal level even in the adverse conditions of military, medical, aerospace or marine environment.

As a company, I am most proud of having the best people who work with me and they continually demonstrate their dedication and quality of workmanship and excellent customer service that is second to none.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is a very good place to start a business if are able to be patient and work with the city getting a permit.

I strongly believe that if you have a strong will, there is always a way to start a business everywhere.
