Meet Salo Mizrachi of EzPacking in Carmel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salo Mizrachi.

Salo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My mom had the idea to start EzPacking. In 2014, my younger sister was going to college in NYC and my mom was helping her pack her suitcases. She was frustrated with the packing process and was looking for a solution to help my sister stay organized on the trip. Not satisfied with the alternatives she found online, she decided to design her own system of clear packing cubes. EzPacking was born when she started this design process. She eventually created a clear packing system that lets you see what you packed in your suitcase and easily stay organized.

I graduated from college in May of 2014 and was backpacking in South America when my mom called me and told me about the idea. I came home in early 2015 and decided to help my mom launch the business. The plan was to help her a few months and then get a job after she was up and running. A few months later, our first batch of inventory arrived and we launched our website at www.ezpacking.com.

There was so much work to do that I ended up staying at home helping my mom with the business. After a few more months, I took over running the day to day operations. My mom helps with designing new products, my dad helps with legal and accounting, and Lucy (our cocker spaniel poodle) is our fulfillment manager.

We are three years in to the journey. It has been so fun and challenging and I am excited for what the future will bring. Since we launched in 2015, we have been able to organize thousands of suitcases around the world!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a pretty smooth road but we have had to make many adjustments. When we first started, we weren’t sure how we were going to sell the product. We explored many different channels like retail, wholesale and live events but ultimately decided that online was the channel for us.

I had no experience with digital marketing before starting the business. Deciding to try go 100% ecommerce definitely had its challenges and I have had to learn a lot to get to where we are now. Last year, we started hiring people to join our team and that has been a fun but very challenging experience. Each month presents a new challenge, but we have been able to work through each obstacle and learn along the way. At each roadblock on this journey, I have been lucky to have local mentors in San Diego with experience to help me through the process.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the EzPacking story. Tell us more about the business.
We design travel accessories to help travelers stay organized on the road. We are most known for our set of clear packing cubes that make a suitcase like a set of clear drawers. We created other travel organization products like a duffle bag, laundry bag, shoe bag, and a set of folding boards to help people neatly fold clothes into the cubes. We are always working on new products to make packing and travel easier.

I am proud that we have made a product that our customers love and use in their lives on a daily basis. I am also proud of the fact that we are a small family run business and responsive to our customers’ needs.

What sets us apart from our competitors is that we focus on creating high quality products at an affordable price. We strive to provide Nordstrom level customer service and treat our customers as we would like to be treated. Our useful products, family approach and high level of customer service have helped us make a name for ourselves online.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has definitely played a role in our lives and business. EzPacking probably wouldn’t exist without the internet. We are able to connect with our customers without an intermediary and I am lucky to be alive in such a time of opportunity. I am lucky to live in a place like San Diego that has so many experienced entrepreneurs. These relationships have been a big help along the way. I am so lucky to have the support of my family and friends throughout this process because it isn’t an easy road.
