Meet Sam Wells of Swells Creative in Oceanside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Wells.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started shooting for Carlsbad Magazine in 2004 and was their head photographer for 4 years. Then I started shooting commercial work and decided to focus on culinary photography 6 years ago. I started shooting videos about 5 years ago and now I’m shooting a majority video and still shooting photos. I’ve been shooting food photos for San Diego magazine for the last 4 years and have done a majority of their food features over that time.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a smooth road and I’ve always got clients through word of mouth and referrals. I try to be easy to work with and get the clients what they want, and it seems to work out fine.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Swells Creative story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in culinary photography and cinematography with an emphasis on sustainability in the food industry. I like to tell stories about food and the people that produce it at every level from the artisan food producers to the chef’s making the final plate. I want to promote people that are making a difference in the culinary world through the choices they make and the ingredients they use. My passion for zero waste and using underutilized fish has driven me to start a website dedicated to the craft of culinary exploration at www.chefepic.com.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
High-level photo and video equipment that used to cost 10 times more is now coming down to a price point that anybody can afford. you can get a kit of gear under 10,000 that will give you the highest level of production value that used to cost you $100,000.

This is going to knock down the barriers to entry that used to exist and will allow anybody to produce high-quality films and photo. The only thing that someone can’t buy is the ability to tell a compelling story in a creative way. The demand for video is also skyrocketing with the rise of social media marketing and every big company wanting to use video to advertise.
