Meet Sandra Munson of METHOD Home Organization in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Munson.

Sandra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started METHOD Home Organization with Melissa Guccini and how you got to where you are today.
Sandra and Melissa have been friends for over a decade, but it wasn’t until 2019 that they launched their home organization company, METHOD Home Organization. Sandra is not new to this field. In 2009, she published her first book, Organizing Do-It-Yourself for Dummies. She is passionate about decluttering and establishing maintainable household systems. Sandra is committed to simply philosophies such as “one in, one out”. She won’t buy a new item unless she knows she has room to store it- and encourages the same of her clients.
Melissa has a background in the hospitality industry and has a keen eye for detail. An avid cook, her specialty naturally lies in kitchen and pantry organization. While very practical in her planning, she also ensures the end product is visually pleasing with proper containers and decorative labels.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our early clients were friends, so we were able to have candid conversations about what does, and doesn’t work. We’ve improved our processes significantly, and use the following strategic METHOD.

– Pre-project questionnaire emailed to the client
– Free 30 minute in home consultation to discuss project and preferences
– Detailed proposal, including recommended items to purchase, and estimated work hours
– Post project maintenance guide.
We feel strategic planning coupled with open communication from the get-go ensures a smooth process and desirable result!

Please tell us about your organization.
We are known as thorough, and creative organizers. When we organize a pantry, we are thorough. ‘We empty the entire space and clean it top to bottom. We ensure all food products are properly stored, and still fresh. (yes! we read expiration dates). Items are thoughtfully grouped to ensure that the pantry functions for the specific needs of the family. Each client is unique – whether our clients are home brewers, or have toddlers that need items out of reach, we will ensure the end product is tailored to their individual needs.

We are creative. A recent client has a son who is a budding artist that loves to create his masterpieces in the kitchen while his mom cooks. His items were stored in deep drawers, and he struggled to find specific markers, stickers, and fresh paper for new projects. We brainstormed for a creative solution and decided on a stylish art-cart on wheels that can be easily transported from room to room, and tucked out of sight when hosting. The client (and her little artist) were thrilled!

Is there anyone, in particular, you would like to recognize? Mentors, etc?
We have to give credit to our network of amazing girlfriends! A girlfriend that let us practice in their kitchen when we were just starting. A girlfriend who hired us to transform her closets and garage on a tight deadline (we only had a handful of days until she was hosting Thanksgiving in her home). A girlfriend who trusted our thoughtfully researched product recommendations. We also have to give a huge shout out to our husbands, who have been endlessly supportive in this new venture.
