Meet Sandra Oberlin of The Way They Grow Photography in Murrieta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Oberlin.

Sandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photos have always been a huge part of my life. Growing up my dad always made it a point to bring his camera to all events we went to. From family gatherings to sports, to just going out front in our yard and snapping pictures of me on my bike. With that being said, I have always been attached to a camera. Fast-forward to 2016, I found out I was pregnant with my daughter.

Right then and there I knew I wanted to give my kids what my dad had given to my sister and I, memories. Taking photos came natural to me. I’m not quite sure why but I just picked it up fast. I’m self-taught so figuring it all out alone was a challenge, and at some point, I wanted to quit. But I pushed through it. From countless videos to hours of using my kids (and the hubs) for practicing, I was able to get to where I am today.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anyone who has said it has been a smooth road in any type of business is lying. There continue to struggle each and every day. Still to this day I struggle with thinking my work is not good enough, it’s a tough thought to get past. There are also days that pass that I think “is my career choice worth it?” “Should I be doing something else instead of this?” Then I pick up my camera, and I get into my element and nothing matters at that moment. Nothing else at all.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a lifestyle/documentary photographer. I specialize in, families, births, children, maternity, weddings, and couples. I am most proud of my company for being able to push through that first year of business. I know how difficult starting a business from the group up can be and I’m so proud of that.

I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m 100% genuinely invested in my clients, and when I say 100%, I’m like 200%. Each and every client I have, I try and develop some sort of relationship with them. I’m making sure I’m accommodating them in each and every way. Sometimes I think they don’t know just how much they mean to me. They are why I do what I do and why I love what I do! Thank You!

What were you like growing up?
I grew up an athlete. I was a total Tomboy. I played baseball when I was five until a lady approached my dad and said, “you know there is a softball league here in town?” I then joined my first t-ball team and instantly fell in love with it. Not long after I started playing soccer. From then on soccer and softball was my passion.

I ended up playing both in high school and then I was offered a full-ride scholarship for both in college. Finally, I obtained my BA in Communications from San Diego Christian College. I will always be grateful for the times I spent on the pitch. I’ve met a lot of people from it who have impacted my life still to this day, and I am so very blessed to have had them in my life.
