Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanja
Hi Sanja, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, my life was a whirlwind of new cities and cultures as my mom’s job had us moving across continents. Each new location brought its rhythm, language, and way of life that I eagerly absorbed. But settling in sunny San Diego, I truly found my heart’s place. Surrounded by its diverse cultures and vibrant communities, my childhood curiosity about the world transformed into a profound love for its languages.
From an early age, I found myself fascinated by the idea that through words, we could peek into someone’s world, experiencing their joys and struggles. Taking whatever extra time I had to help out at my local language school, I saw firsthand the bridges that language could build. Whether through helping Emcee the next award ceremony or playing an instrument on stage at SeaWorld to celebrate the Lunar New Year. There, amidst the other children, I realized how language opens doors to new worlds and hearts.
However, my true moment of clarity came from a familiar hum—the sound of airplanes. To me, airplanes were more than just vehicles; they were vessels of connection, ferrying not just people but perspectives across the globe. With every flight, whether landing in a new city or returning home, I saw the threads that connect us all—threads of hope, struggle, and dreams.
This realization sparked a desire to harness this power of connection for something greater. Witnessing the global challenges, I knew we could contribute in countless ways, even as young individuals. I envisioned a platform where youth could learn from each other, advocate for understanding, and engage in acts of kindness. This vision was the genesis of GlobalVisioneers.
We started small, a group of local students eager to make a difference. But soon, our efforts blossomed into a community-wide movement driven by the belief that our differences don’t divide us; they enrich and unite us.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up with a landscape constantly shifting under my feet, adapting became second nature. But finding my footing in the world of social entrepreneurship, particularly as a high schooler with a vision like mine, came with its own unique set of challenges.
One of the first hurdles was simply the need for precedents. There were few—if any—role models who were also high school students spearheading global initiatives. This lack of a roadmap meant that every step was uncharted, which was both exhilarating and daunting. The absence of a clear path often seeded doubts: Was I doing this right? Could a teenager really make a meaningful impact on such a large scale?
Then there was the challenge of legitimacy. Initially, it felt like an uphill battle to be taken seriously. Here I was, a high school student passionate about fostering global connections through language and culture, yet often, my age seemed to be a louder statement than my mission. Convincing adults—potential partners, sponsors, even volunteers—that a youth-led initiative was capable of professional-level impact involved a passion but a hefty dose of persistence and professionalism far beyond what was typical for my age.
Internally, the doubts were relentless. Was I prepared to lead? Could I manage a school and a growing organization? There were moments when the weight of what I was attempting felt overwhelming. The fear of failure was palpable—not just failing myself, but failing my team and everyone who believed in what GlobalVisioneers could achieve.
However, every challenge also presented an opportunity. The absence of role models taught me the importance of resilience and innovation. I learned to trust my instincts, adapt quickly, and, most importantly, reach out for support when needed. I surrounded myself with a team of peers, friends, and mentors whose skills and dedication helped compensate for my areas of uncertainty.
Navigating the skepticism about my age taught me the power of conviction and the importance of presenting my vision clearly and confidently. Each successful project, each positive outcome, built our credibility and turned skepticism into support.
Through these personal struggles, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about the courage to pursue a vision in the face of uncertainty and the strength to keep going despite the odds. It’s about building a community that shares that vision and is willing to join you on the journey, regardless of the obstacles.
Facing these challenges, head-on has shaped GlobalVisioneers into what it is today and has molded me into a leader ready to take on whatever comes next. These experiences have imbued me with a deeper understanding of my mission and a greater resolve to continue pushing forward, no matter the obstacles.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Starting GlobalVisioneers was like a calling. Inspired by my experiences growing up in a melting pot of cultures and languages and fueled by the belief that we, as young people, are just as capable of driving significant change, I decided to transform my ideas into action. I saw a unique opportunity to leverage our shared experiences and the universal language of empathy to connect youth worldwide, broadening their horizons and fostering mutual understanding.
GlobalVisioneers began as a simple idea: create a space where young people could learn about different cultures through language, arts, and direct communication. We started with language workshops, where local students could dive into new languages as academic subjects and as gateways to new ways of seeing the world. These workshops quickly expanded to include cultural exchange programs like pen-pals, where students from different continents could share their daily lives, discuss their cultural practices, and build friendships that transcended geographic and cultural boundaries.
Our mission is to cultivate a generation of global citizens who love languages and possess a deep empathy for people worldwide. Understanding and connections can lead to more compassionate leadership and collaborative solutions to global challenges.
GlobalVisioneers is preparing for a series of events highlighting our commitment to cultural exchange and education. These include a citywide art exhibition in partnership with the City of Chula Vista and Mayor John McCann, showcasing artworks that narrate diverse cultural stories currently ongoing this month, and a virtual cultural exchange session planned for the summer, connecting local students with peers across the globe.
Through GlobalVisioneers, we’re not just teaching languages—we’re opening minds and fostering a generation of empathetic, global citizens and building a network of connected stories and shared dreams.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Defining success for GlobalVisioneers goes beyond the typical metrics. It’s about the real, tangible impacts we make in communities and the bridges we build between diverse cultures. As a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we’ve marked significant milestones that reflect our commitment and the effectiveness of our mission.
One of our key achievements has been collaborating with local Chula Vista elementary and middle schools to host “Imago Dei,” a vibrant celebration of cultures. This event features an array of performances that showcase the rich diversity of our community alongside language workshops that encourage young students to explore and appreciate different cultural landscapes. Through these initiatives, we aim to foster a deep-seated respect and understanding among the younger generation.
We’ve also partnered with Orbis International, an organization dedicated to preventing and treating avoidable blindness through training, research, and advocacy. Our joint fundraisers have supported their global health initiatives, as well as with city governments, for example, being awarded a special Citizen of Recognition Award by Mayor John McCann, demonstrating how community efforts can contribute to significant global causes.
Looking abroad, we have successfully expanded our reach to international locales such as Canada and Hong Kong, setting up chapters replicating our successful cultural and language exchange models. These expansions increase our impact and reinforce our global network of young visionaries.
In the future, we plan to deepen our educational offerings, extend our global partnerships, and innovate our program delivery to meet the evolving needs of our communities. Success to me is seeing a young person gain a new understanding or a community come together to celebrate their collective diversity. It’s about the smiles, the connections formed, and the global perspective that we nurture in the youth.
To me, success isn’t just in the scale of our operations but in the depth of our impact. Each new smile exchanged, each story shared, and each barrier broken down contributes to a richer, kind, and more empathetic world. That is the true measure of what we achieve at GlobalVisioneers. To all the young leaders out there, the sky’s the limit!
