Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Heckman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The idea of opening a yarn shop started awhile back when we were living in Basking Ridge, NJ and a small yarn shop opened in our town. It was a unique blend of yarn, antiques and handmade goods from around the area. Watching this shop grow into a friendly, neighborhood destination was my inspiration for the shop we have today.
Has it been a smooth road?
We are quite new, just opening in July, so everything we do is for the first time. Some of our events have been a great success while others have yet to catch on. We are very happy with the location we chose and it has been one of the best decisions we have made.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Apricot Yarn and Supply story. Tell us more about the business.
Apricot Yarn and Supply is a small yarn shop stocking beautiful natural fiber yarn from local dyers and world-renowned yarn makers such as BAAH from Oceanside, CA and Noro from Japan. We have wonderful tools for knitters and crocheters, with an emphasis on natural fibers and materials.
Our friendly staff is happy to help with projects, yarn selection and everyone is welcome to join us for our monthly Knit Night!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Knitting and crochet seem to be very popular right now. People are looking for something tangible to do with their hands, something comforting and a way to connect with others like themselves.
Social media plays a big role in how crafters are sharing what they make and how they make it, this will continue to grow, encouraging more of us to try something new using tutorials easily found online.
For the local knit shop, I think this means we need to be connected to people on social media, as well the place to come for in-person help and encouragement, the social hangout for connecting through craft.
