Meet Sarah Baecher of Splashes of Hope

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Baecher.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Splashes of Hope was founded in 1996 by Heather Buggée in reaction to her own experience in typical, dreary medical settings. During her art school years, Heather had a friend that was afflicted with Hodgkin’s Disease and was an inpatient in a local hospital. Heather and her friend often discussed ways to improve the hospital’s aesthetics. Their idea that positive imagery and an appealing environment would improve a patient’s spirit and attitude, and support the healing process, was the genesis of Splashes of Hope.

Heather’s friend, sadly, did not survive his illness, but their dream lived on. Heather and her team have turned the dream into reality as Splashes Of Hope continues its mission to create customized mural work to improve healthcare and social service environments for patients, their families and staff. Our murals grace locations throughout the United States, and internationally.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Splashes of Hope has celebrated its 21st anniversary in November 2017. Through the years the biggest struggle is probably seeing the suffering that exists in healthcare facilities, with the patients that need to be strong in tremendously difficult trials of life. These are burn centers, cancer wards, and rehab centers. However, with a mission to improve the environment, it is an amazing precedent to be able to help with the experience, especially seeing the reactions of hospitalized children, adult patients, and war veterans.

Splashes of Hope – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Splashes of Hope is a non-profit public charity dedicated to transforming the environments of hospitals, healthcare centers and social service facilities with custom designed hand-painted murals. The artwork is designed to comfort patients during treatment, healing and recovery by providing a soothing and uplifting visual focus. Each mural is designed to address the unique needs of the patients, their family and the staff that cares for them.

The Splash team has come across many walks of life, with creative artists, the noble staff within the healthcare industry, and generous donors. It has also been a pleasure to work together with fellow non-profits, in empowering and driving a change for the community.

Along with mural projects, Splashes of Hope has a new program: ‘Painting for a Purpose.’ The Splash Team hosts an event where attendees put on an apron, take a brush, and help paint in a mural that will be donated to a local healthcare or social service center. Whether a company, community organization, or corporation; conference, staff party, or gala, ‘Painting for a Purpose’ is a great way to give back to the community! The Splash team had the pleasure of recently hosting a ‘Painting for a Purpose’ event, and creating murals in San Diego! The Team also collaborated with local artists to detail the murals. Thanks to our new friends in San Diego for helping create these unique pieces to brighten the lives of hospitalized children. Donated to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, the murals depict local scenes of the area.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is an ongoing force to create a better community. Through creativity, positivity, and teamwork, a group can make improvements to affect the environment of those around them. From a community initiative, the world can be influenced.

This was the most fulfilling event in San Diego in which to participate. Heather and the entire Splashes team is such a talented, giving and all-around great group of folks. If you are an artist and you have an opportunity to paint with them in your area, please do not pass it up. You will not be disappointed in the experience. It warms my heart to see some of the patients with the murals. Did I say it was a fun day???
