Meet Sarah Oconnor of Costa Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Oconnor

Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started drawing at a young age of 5 years old. I was inspired by my grandpa, who I’d watch draw whenever I’d visit him. At that age, I’d sit out in my parents yard and doodle in my sketchbook. Fast forward 12 years, I took my first drawing class at Laguna College of Art and Design. I took their portfolio building class and learned many fundamentals of drawing and various techniques. Once college came around I decided to attend Laguna College of Art and Design. I received a BFA in Illustration in 2018. Currently, I am an art teacher at a private art studio for children ages 9-18. I’ve been teaching at that studio nearly 6 years now.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel over all it’s been a process. Even though I love art, it was definitely a struggle in college since I didn’t have art lessons to give me experience. Throughout college I was very determined to excel and prove my skill.

Currently, career wise, it has been a struggle getting my name out there and finding a full time job. I have experience working with clients on various types of art commissions. Hopefully in the near future I cross paths with the right people, industry &/or company in landing a full time job.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My love is watercolor. I feel at peace and in my own world when using this medium. I also love integrating other mediums like ink, pens, markers & colored pencils into my works. The traditional mediums makes me happy. I love getting my hands messy while creating a piece of art.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel attention and determination are two key characteristics one should have. The those I feel it will help in succeeding and finding the right path to then follow down
