Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna Lewis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always knew I had a passion for hair and makeup. Being a cheerleader for 14 years, I was always surrounded by hair and makeup. Most of the time in high school, I was the one everyone asked to do their hair and makeup. What really started the passion for me was YouTube, When I had first been allowed to use makeup, I searched how to apply it and use it.
This led me into the world of beauty and really sparked my love for it. I absolutely love how creative you can be in this industry and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I enrolled in the cosmetology program at Bellus Academy and started within three weeks of graduating high school.
After 1600 hours in the program, I finally graduated and got my license. Shortly after receiving my cosmetology license, I enrolled and attended the master makeup artistry program. I completed my 602 hours learning every aspect of makeup.
Some things I learned were natural makeup, special effects, photography makeup, avant-garde, and even male makeup. I completed the course and obtained my makeup certification. I wasn’t ready to stop learning yet, so I attended the barbering course as well. I am very fortunate to have known what I wanted to do and start at such a young age.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to being where I am currently was not easy. In high school, my teachers told me that I was “too smart” for beauty school, that it was not a “practical career” and I would just be wasting my time. I even applied to colleges and got accepted.
My grandfather LeRoy Pellonari told me to ignore what my teachers had said to do follow my passion or else I wouldn’t be happy in life. That was just the push I needed to get my dreams going. Now here I am, a licensed cosmetologist, licensed barber, and a certified makeup artist all at the age of 20 with so many doors open for me.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Currently, I am a freelance artist, which lets me work in multiple areas of the industry. Like previously mentioned, I am a licensed cosmetologist, licensed barber, and certified makeup artist, which I am super proud to say.
This sets me apart from others in the industry since this makes me very versatile. I do many things such as hair color, woman’s hair cutting, men’s hair cutting, hair styling, straight razor shaving, natural makeup, glam makeup, airbrush makeup, special effects and so much more.
I would say my specialty would be styling, I love curling and braiding especially. One of my favorite things to work would be weddings. It is always such an amazing experience to be a part of someone’s special day.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be when I would get into my Great Grandmother’s makeup, especially her red lipstick. I am very fortunate to have a young family which allowed me to have a relationship with my great-grandparents.
I can still remember the gold vintage packing on all the products. Vintage makeup was so beautiful. I am sure this had sparked my interest in makeup at a young age and played a huge role in my growing love and passion for the industry.
