Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Chipman.
Scott, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My wife and I met in college in environmental design classes in 1970. Over the next few years we determined to get married and start a furniture design and manufacturing business. Upon graduation, we worked for a couple years for others in the design industry and then started our business in 1977. This is our 40th year. We started designing and building custom furniture, then added cabinetry, next wood doors and windows and finally metal doors and windows including bronze, stainless steel, aluminum and combinations of wood and metals.
These have become product lines but all work is custom for the project. We adapt previous product designs to meet current and new client/project needs.
We also design and build custom skylights, paneling, ceilings, gates, and many other architectural accessories/components. We also apply current smart technologies such as motorization and remote locking to our products.
Nearly all our work is for high end custom homes. We have been agile identifying trends and moving in the directions.
Has it been a smooth road?
The first decade, I worked about 60 hours per work. We started the business in a recession (not sure we knew it was a recession at age 25). We have survived about 3-4 recessions/economic downturns. As our children were born I determined I would try to take most if not all Saturdays off and never work on Sunday. It was important for us to have a balance. The business was to support our life and family and we were not primarily to support the business.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Best: The weather, the small town atmosphere for a larger city, the varied terrain and ocean and bay.
Worst: The politics of the city have always been or seemed to be shady. The city council is getting worse over time. The promotion of drug businesses related to marijuana is horrible for our kids, communities, business, etc.
