Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott James.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My interest in photography began back when I was 15 or so when I saw a photographer from a sports publication wandering around at a racetrack and then coming upon his name in a magazine a few weeks later.
Since then I’ve been trying to capture what I see…the absolute beauty and detail in a moment. From a car actually sliding through a corner at over 230mph to a surfer at one with a wave that from a distance the details are lost. Always trying my best to show the motion, grace, and beauty in it all.
My passion in bringing these images to those around me has morphed a bit since November of 2006, with my diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). With my vision in my right eye taken along with just the general pain in the buttness of having MS, its become important to me to leave behind images of what a life can still do and achieve regardless of a short straw drawn.
Please tell us about your art.
Images of a moment. From 2000th of a second to 1 second. The motion, light, form, and nature of the image.
Each image, I want to looker to go with me…to see what I did, or see something even I didn’t notice at the moment.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
What was told to me way back in the day, I still pass along to everyone that’s ever asked me that same type of question…
Never, be afraid to suck at what you love to do while you’re learning and finding your way. Measure yourself to who you feel are your betters, and be humble. And be OK with hearing many NOs before you hear the YES.
And important thing to remember #2… It’s NOT the arrow that’s good. It’s the Indian shooting it that makes it good.
You can drop a ton of money with regard to camera equipment. Learn to use the equipment you DO have. When the money starts to come, you can buy quality. But until you learn how to use the equipment, you DO have, buying the best will just be a waste of money. Learn to drive the Sports Car, before you buy the FAST one. Or you’re just gonna crash it.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
At the moment all of my images are there for the viewing online at sjamesphoto on FB and Instagram. All my contact info is on both of those platforms.
