Meet Sean Greene of Morrison Insurance in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Greene.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sean. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I majored in Human Resource Management and ended up in a sales training position for a large insurance carrier. Not long into my career I was a Senior Sales Executive for UnitedHealthcare working on employers with between 100 and 10,000 employees. In terms of insurance experience, I don’t think I could have been in a better place to learn as much as I did about the industry. After about 5 years there was an opening to help open a new market here in San Diego for a division of Anthem. I jumped at the chance to move to San Diego (who wouldn’t).

There was an adjustment period of about a year getting used to the San Diego pace of business. San Diego is also where I realized that being in a corporate role in the insurance industry was not the right fit for me. I was fortunate enough to meet Jim Morrison who was a broker here in San Diego that I had the chance to do business with.

He was one of the most knowledgeable brokers I had ever worked with including my time in New York. We discussed the idea of me switching to the broker side for about a year until I did end up making the move.

Being on this side of the business has definitely proved to be the best fit for me. Having full control to be able to do what is best for your clients is enlightening. I believe most people want to do what is best for their clients, but they might not always have the authority to do that. I’m extremely fortunate to have had the chance to go on this journey with Jim.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not. As anyone who started a business will say there are always going to be growing pains. There are literally thousands of licensed insurance brokers in San Diego County so its fair to say its a pretty crowded space.

From early on in my career I was very used to working hard and achieving a certain level of success. After a year I learned that as an insurance broker it doesn’t necessarily matter how hard you work. It is a business that does take time to grow. I would say it took me about 3 years until I hit any level of what I would consider success.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are one of the largest privately held health insurance brokers here in San Diego County. We help make sure small and medium-sized businesses are using the most efficient health insurance options for their employees. Efficient may sound like a strange term, but health insurance is extremely expensive. We work to ensure that the employer and employees are all getting the best value for the large amount of money that is spent.

Our company is known for a very high touch service model. Some agencies push off as much work back to the companies as possible or they are outsourcing the service to other parties. We are the exact opposite. We try to take as much off of our client’s plate as possible as well as managing the service ourselves internally. Clients find when working with us “magically” things are done faster and easier. It’s not magic, just doing what we believe to be the right thing for people.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
That is a tough question to answer. For the businesses I like to work with I believe San Diego is one of the best possible cities to be in the country. The struggle is that we also have a number of businesses that end up leaving Southern California.
