Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Skylar.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up, I always had creative interests and a passion for music. I was particularly drawn to the energy of rock music, and I remember classic rock radio playing throughout my childhood. It wasn’t until the age of 13 that I turned on an instructional DVD on how to play guitar and I started learning, and this was the beginning of my musical journey. I quickly took to guitar playing and surrounded myself with musician friends, eager to learn and perform. By the age of 15, I was writing songs while singing and playing guitar in a band, and I began dreaming of a career in music. Around this time, I started recording songs for friends and some of my own music.
I learned to play many instruments for recording purposes. I attended open mic events and began performing as a solo acoustic act as well. During my college years, I continued to perform regularly as a singer/songwriter throughout local venues and started to further develop techniques in recording, producing, and songwriting. I recently graduated from college with a degree in Liberal Arts, and of course Music. Always keeping my music career in mind, at 23, I am now free to pursue it full time.
Please tell us about your art.
My creative process for songwriting starts with the music. I will usually play acoustic guitar and see if I come up with anything that sparks interest for a new song. I often find the ideas for lyrics come from the vibe of the music and that inspires the words, and then the song flows. One of the most difficult parts of the songwriting process for me is completing lyrics for a song that I feel accurately describes the situation and mood I am trying to portray. Most of my original music comes from experiences of my own, or someone I know. Sometimes I write about things I see. It is really exciting when a song is finished and sounding the way I imagined.
Though I admit, many times a song takes on a life of its own. I have written thousands of songs over the years that have not yet found their way to completion. Sometimes time offers a new perspective and there is always a new song right around the corner. I hope when people listen to my music, they can take away something valuable, whether it’s a new perspective, a feeling of inspiration, or the realization that they are not alone in whatever they are going through. Music has an incredible ability to unite people despite differences, and I hope that my music somehow contributes to making life a little brighter.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Making it in the music industry seems to always have been a challenge, but I think current social media and the internet, offering worldwide exposure to everyone, has redefined a music career altogether. It offers equal opportunity for all musicians to be heard, and that’s a good thing. Supporting local artists by liking and following their pages and engaging in their content is vital for musicians in the age of social media, and it offers them an opportunity for exposure and success.
