Meet Shane Autumn Nebbia of Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Autumn Nebbia.

Hi Shane Autumn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The only logical explanation for my love of baking has to be that my mom was eating cookie dough by the spoonfuls when she was pregnant with me. Some of my earliest childhood memories include her and me hovering over a bowl of butter and sugar, fiercely mixing ingredients together, with flour clouding up into the air and onto our clothes.

The love for sweets runs deep in my family—so much so that my brother and I would sneak into the kitchen after everyone went to bed and steal cookies from the cookie jar.

Earlier this year my boyfriend, Chandler, and I were sitting on the beach talking about our childhood dreams. The notion that “life is short” often comes up for us, so naturally, we began discussing the possibilities of what realizing those dreams could entail. Soon, we were fantasizing about what it would be like to open a micro bakery, offering the treats we grew up eating and connecting with our community here in San Diego on a deeper level.

Just two months later, “Honey Bubzooks” was born. We launched our first pop-up event, where we sold out within an hour and a half. Since then, we’ve hosted more pop-ups and are now busy fulfilling orders for local north county coffee shops, birthdays, graduation parties, Mother’s and Father’s Day, and gender reveal events. The inspiration behind the name “Honey Bubzooks” is an ode to my dad’s childhood nickname for me, from whom I inherited the same entrepreneurial spirit.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges is working from a tiny kitchen while juggling the bakery business alongside both of our full-time jobs. However, getting to be a part of people’s special occasions and seeing the smiles on their faces when they bite into something we create makes all the late nights and early mornings worth it. Bringing this dream of mine to life has been incredibly rewarding, especially with Chandler as my partner in all of it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our signature pastry, which put us on the map, is our “crack cake”—our take on a pound cake, but way more addicting, hence the name. Other items on our menu include coffee cakes, cookies, scones, olive oil cakes, and more. What’s unique about our sweets, aside from the flavors, is the floral flair we incorporate— inspired by my love for the natural beauty around us, we find pride in making everything look as beautiful as it tastes. Or, as my two nieces say, we bake “fairy cakes”.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
One of my favorite things about San Diego is that it’s so community-oriented. There is an ever-growing list of activities, meet-ups, and events that offer something for everyone, which feels really unique to this city. I’m so inspired by all of the other small business owners for remembering that life is indeed, short, and for going after their dreams.
