Meet Shane Wiese

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Wiese.

Shane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was around 18 years old, I was in Maui on vacation and noticed a Peter Lik Gallery. I was amazed by the photos and instantly knew that I wanted to learn everything there is to know about photography. When I got home, I began to learn the fundamentals of how cameras work. I purchased my first camera which was a Pentax K20D, and I began taking photos of everything I could using trial and error to figure out how certain settings affected the image. Later on, in life, I learned how to scuba dive and that literally opened up a whole new world to photograph. In 2012, after doing a lot of research and saving up a lot of money, I sold my Pentax gear and bought a Nikon D800E, a Nauticam underwater housing, and some underwater strobes. Underwater photography has been my passion ever since because it is challenging and I am always learning something new.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t necessarily been a smooth road, but I am constantly learning new things and trying to find ways to get my art out into the world. There are a lot of photographers, so standing out is probably the most challenging thing.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I specialize in underwater photography. I also shoot underwater photos for a local swim school. I am most proud of being able to travel to places I thought I would never visit and share photos of the various things I see. What sets me apart is my determination to constantly learn new things about photography and then use that knowledge to create better and better images.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is a great place for art and photography! They have made it easier to sell stuff at local venues like La Jolla cove. There are also a lot of art events that give people a chance to show their work. I can’t think of anything to improve upon.
