Today we’d like to introduce you to Shashi Pal.
Shashi started in this industry years ago. She is the American dream. She came to America from India in 1977. In 1979 she started working in a factory trimming thread. In India she was a housewife that would cook and make clothes for her kids. In America she did not have a car, she would walk to work, and come home with aching hands. After that she got a job as a seamstress. Then as a floor supervisor. Then as a sample maker for Weekend Exercise Company.
Some women at Weekend Exercise helped her get Reebok work and she would sew at home until 1:00 am then go to her regular job. One day, she quit her sample maker job at Weekend Exercise and started Indu Fashions so she could save enough to send her daughters to school. That was about 26 years ago.
During that time, she has seen a lot and done a lot. Most of the work has now gone overseas. Before, they had Reebok, Hind, Adidas, Brooks, Prana, Zoot and many others. Overtime, the business model has changed, people no longer want to hold on to inventory. They do smaller but consistent runs. But the bigger companies have all gone overseas where prices are less.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenges faced, and continues to this day, is competing with overseas markets/prices, losing big name companies and larger contracts. Even if these companies save $1 overseas and are making 1 million units. They would save $1M dollars. We can compete with quality but not price because we are 100% legal company and treat/pay our employees fair.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Indu Fashions – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a garment manufacturer in San Diego specializing in athletic apparel and flat lock stitching. We are known for our producing quality garments. We think that is why we’ve been in business for so long just through word of mouth.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are planning to continue producing excellent quality garments as long as possible.
