Today we’d like to introduce you to Shatayja Beck.
Shatayja, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was eight, my mom passed away and when I was 13, I was taken into the system. I grew up thinking I was never gonna be anything because of where my life was going but I’ve always been a motivation young lady and I told myself I was never gonna let that happen. All I really wanna do is make my mom proud and become stable enough to take care of my kid brother that was separated from me. I’ve had a lot of obstacles in life especially ones I didn’t deserve so I’m here going after the things that I do deserve.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I grew up moving from house to house then after my mom died, I started moving from foster home to group home. My toughest challenge is saying good bye to good people I’ve met along the way. Growing up without my brother was very hard because he’s the last piece of my mother I have left and he’s also what keeps me going. After losing one parent, I lost the other emotionally they weren’t married but the dad I knew died with my mom. I don’t use None of the things I went through as an excuse for anything (except my mental health) I use it as motivation to get somewhere and be something.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Shmoneey Visuals – what should we know?
Shmoneey Visuals is my photography company I started up and I am really hoping will grow. I specialize in photography from nature to people and soon I will start including videography. The thing I’m most proud of is how much time and effort I take; photography is not something you rush. I think like this if I was the one behind the camera would I like this and if the answer is no what can I do to make is better. This is a black business; all I really want is support from my community. For right now I want to be that photographer that everyone calls because I got the good prices and the good quality. I want every costumer to be happy with my work and I can guarantee they will.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ve had so much help along the way , if I ever write a book they will get their own pages at the end but the people I have to shout out is : my mom who birthed me, my two mentors who always support any crazy idea I have , my auntie who helped my mom raise me and even when my mom was gone she was my second mom , my bestfriend who’s my emotionally support always , my girlfriend who’s my number one fan in anything I do , my lil brother who don’t even know but he’s my whole world and motivation to be the best I can be & my friend and partner Janae Bell , she was my first official photoshoot and we always support each other 100% in everything we do and everyone needs that one friend.
