Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaunee Hall.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been writing and taking portraits since middle school. In high school, I was the photographer for my Thespian group and got many of my photographs published in the yearbook.
Now, I have combined a love of photography and writing together. I blog on my website, called The Marilyn Post. I explore new areas of San Diego, and take portraits there! I also recently self-published a book. I have been working on it since sixth grade. After rewriting and perfecting it, I recently published in August of 2019. I’ve sold over 800 copies so far! It is called “The Call of the Elements” and is sold through Amazon.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say the main challenge I’ve had along the way was doubts. In high school, I had two teachers who told me I was a terrible writer and would never get published. It got so bad, that I actually gave up on my dream for a while. But then, I read through one of my old manuscripts and felt inspired all over again. I knew if I really wanted to be a published author, I could do it.
I’d also get picked on for spending most of my time editing photos or wanting to take pictures of people. But I knew that was never going to make me quit.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I take free portraits, write on my blog, and keep tabs on my book sales.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Writing stories and hanging out with my little siblings! I am the oldest of six, but soon to be eight. My mother is having twins!
