Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Harris.
Sheila, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
With 4 children and a non-profit humanitarian organization that we run full time, dinnertime around the table was getting hard to do. We value the time to connect around the table, the value of eating healthy food and the value of having a budget that we can keep, and we were finding it harder and harder to accomplish these goals! I heard about Dream Dinners and read about the founder’s vision and why they started this business, they had the same goals I did!
A business that puts family and friends at the forefront, creating recipes that are healthy and quick to cook, but keep in the freezer until ready to make… a whole month of meals to feed my family.
Because we knew the difference this made for our family, we wanted to run a business that we knew would bring families back around the table and create that quality time we all look for, helping families experience the difference like we did. We now have had Dream Dinners for 13 years, and are in the top 3 in the nation for people that come through our doors and make dinners! We have purchased a second store this last year in Santa Monica and working on bringing that influence to that city as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a great learning experience. Because I love the focus of family and food, that is what I know well. What I had to learn is the business side of management, budgeting, working with the public and marketing. That road was up and down, but always moving forward. The market crash in 2009 brought new challenges to the business with a greater depth of knowledge required with budgeting and marketing, but happily, we survived and the company was strengthened.
Poway Dream Dinners – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are the original meal prep company. We do all the shopping, prepping of ingredients and provide all the recipes to make an easy healthy family-friendly meal. We partner with Sysco foods, so our quality is very high. There is a team of food nutrition and chef trained people that create new recipes and bring back favorites so that each month has 17 different choices of entrees.
What I love about dd is that we bring the family back around the table and we hear testimonies all the time of the difference we make… in marriages, quality time with people we love, helping out those going through grief or sickness, food has no boundaries and brings a sense of comfort. Even though food is what we do, it is the people that we are about.
We care. Our mission statement is to grow great kids, bringing families together around the dinner table and that really is our goal.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
We won the award at the International Franchise Association in 2017 for a franchise store that “has the heart to give back to the community and make a difference”. We were very honored to be chosen.
