Meet Shelly Fiorentini

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Fiorentini.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a local San Diegan. Being able to grow up with the beach at my fingertips, as well as, all the beauty and diversity San Diego has to offer has been one of the biggest blessings in my life. I have a true and deep connection to this city and so trying to capture it’s many unique locations and gorgeous settings came naturally to me as a photographer.

I originally began my focus on wedding and event photography. I loved the excitement, passion and glamour that went with it. However, after having my daughter, I developed an affection for photographing families, babies and children. The miracle of having a baby changed my perspective on so many things, including a larger appreciation for family connection. I found myself constantly wanting to freeze these special moments as my daughter grew and changed.

Please tell us about your art.
My focus now has been Maternity, Newborn and Sitter Sessions. Documenting that first year of a baby’s life and the journey a family experiences from pregnancy to the 1st birthday is so important. So many changes, growth, milestones, etc. that make that 1st year especially meaningful, not to mention how fast it all goes. Maternity Sessions I know first-hand from having my daughter, it was all a blur and I cherish the images I have, that take me back and melt my heart. I realize that others should have the opportunity to save these special moments and how important the images will be in the future when their children are reaching all new milestones in their life.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I feel the definition of a successful artist is so personal, it’s different for everyone and where they are with their art. For me, doing what I love, producing a photograph that brings up emotions of happiness, excitement, hope, future, feeling beautiful, are what makes me think my photograph is a success. When a client is happy and feels represented to their best, knowing they will have memories of this special time in their family’s life, is success. If you belong to the “parent club” you know it gets messy more times than not and to have images that freeze the good times is so important.
