Meet Sherry Castillo of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Castillo

Sherry, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins with a journey of resilience, creativity, and a deep connection to natural beauty. I was born in Sanandaj (A village in IRAN), grew up in Tehran, and moved to Canada when I was 20 years old. It was there that I spent over 15 years building a career in immigration consulting, working closely with clients to help them navigate life-changing transitions. But life, as it often does, brought unexpected changes. I left Canada at 36 and found myself in Turkey, a place that taught me how to rebuild from scratch. While there, I discovered a love for natural skincare, launching my own organic skincare line—my very first step into the world of beauty and self-care.

My personal journey with skincare has always been deeply emotional. I struggled with dull skin, dry scalp, and breakouts, which affected my confidence. That’s when I started researching the power of natural, botanical ingredients—traditional remedies passed down in Persian culture, combined with modern formulations that bring real results. I saw firsthand how clean, non-toxic products could transform skin and how they made me feel inside and out.

Moving to San Diego was another fresh start for me, filled with challenges and opportunities. Amidst settling into a new life and environment, the idea for Sherry Botanical began to take shape. I wanted to create something beautiful—something that wasn’t just about skincare but about self-care, artistry, and love. Every product I create reflects my journey: delicate, clean, and intentional. I chose to honor my roots, naming my first collection “Shahrbanoo” after my mother, a name that means “Lady of the County” in Persian—a tribute to her grace, strength, and the beauty of Persian traditions.

Balancing a full-time job, a new home, and building Sherry Botanical hasn’t been easy. I’ve poured everything I have—my time, energy, and heart—into making this dream a reality. My products are crafted to be more than skincare; they’re an invitation to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and embrace the beauty of natural ingredients.

Today, Sherry Botanical stands as a reflection of my journey—from Sanandaj to San Diego, from challenges to opportunities, and from doubt to confidence. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited to share this story—and these creations—with the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to building Sherry Botanical has been anything but smooth, but I believe every challenge has shaped me and brought me closer to where I am today. Life has taught me that growth often happens in the most unexpected and uncomfortable moments.

Leaving behind the life I built in Canada after 15 years was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. I moved to Turkey, where I found myself starting from zero in an unfamiliar place. But it was there that I learned resilience—how to adapt, dream, and rebuild. It’s also where I took my first steps into creating my own organic skincare products, driven by a personal struggle with my skin. At the time, I didn’t have the resources or experience; I just had a deep belief that clean, natural ingredients could heal and transform not just the skin, but also the spirit.

When I moved to San Diego, I was starting over again—new country, new culture, and no established community. Financially, emotionally, and mentally, it was overwhelming. I was balancing part-time jobs, adjusting to married life, and finding the courage to build something of my own while constantly questioning if I was enough or if I had what it takes. I poured my savings into Sherry Botanical because I believe in it wholeheartedly, but at times, that uncertainty and fear of failure made me feel paralyzed.

One of the biggest struggles has been balancing this dream with the demands of daily life. Starting a new full-time job as a leasing consultant has meant long hours, less time at home, and learning to navigate an entirely new industry while growing my brand. There have been moments where I felt stretched too thin, where I questioned if I was making progress or if it was all just too much.

But what keeps me going is remembering why I started. I think back to the women who have influenced my life—my mother, my Persian heritage, and the traditions that inspired me to create natural, gentle skincare. I remind myself that I’ve overcome so much to get here, and if I can keep taking one step forward, even on the hardest days, then I’m already winning.

No, it hasn’t been smooth—but I wouldn’t change the journey. The struggles have taught me patience, strength, and the power of believing in my vision. Sherry Botanical isn’t just a brand to me; it’s my story, my heart, and my promise to anyone who needs a little more beauty and care in their life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At its core, Sherry Botanical is an extension of my creativity, love for nature, and dedication to self-care. I create organic, natural skincare products that are as beautiful and intentional as they are effective. Each product is designed to nourish mature skin while honoring the delicate balance between nature, science, and artistry.

I specialize in developing clean, non-toxic formulations using gentle botanicals inspired by my Persian heritage and the timeless skincare traditions of the Middle East. My collection includes products like the Floral Elixir Toner, Calm and Clear Moisturizer, and Pro-Collagen Sleep-On Mask. These products aren’t just about skincare—they are crafted experiences that invite people to slow down, indulge in self-care, and reconnect with themselves.

What I’m most proud of is the story behind my work. My first collection, Shahrbanoo, is named in honor of my mother—a tribute to her grace, strength, and the traditions she passed down to me. It’s deeply personal, reminding me of the resilience it took to bring this brand to life. Every product reflects my journey across cultures and continents, from growing up in Iran to rebuilding in Canada, Turkey, and now San Diego. I’ve poured my heart into Sherry Botanical—from the ingredients I choose to the way I design the packaging to feel clean, delicate, and luxurious.

What sets me apart is my focus on storytelling, culture, and artistry. Sherry Botanical isn’t just another skincare brand—it’s a reflection of life’s beauty and challenges. My products combine natural, California-sourced ingredients with a touch of Persian wisdom, creating formulations that celebrate simplicity, effectiveness, and connection. I want my customers to feel like they’re not just buying skincare; they’re experiencing something crafted with care, love, and intention.

I’m also proud to say that every step of this brand—designing labels, curating formulations, and sharing my story—has been led by me. It hasn’t always been easy, but I believe that art comes alive when you’re willing to share a piece of yourself with the world.

At the end of the day, what makes Sherry Botanical unique is its heart. It’s not about trends or quick fixes; it’s about timeless, natural beauty and the quiet power of taking care of yourself. My work is my art, and I’m honored to share it with others.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor or building meaningful connections is something I’ve learned through my own experiences across different countries and industries. My advice is to lead with authenticity and curiosity. Instead of approaching networking with the mindset of “What can I get?” I focus on building genuine relationships, asking questions, and showing a true interest in others’ work, passions, and stories.

What has worked well for me is being open to learning from people around me, even in unexpected ways. Sometimes mentors don’t come in the traditional form of an “official” advisor. A casual conversation, a shared experience, or a supportive friend can offer guidance that shapes your journey. For me, the people I’ve met through work, my travels, and even social media have offered valuable insights that helped me grow, both personally and professionally.

When I moved to San Diego, I didn’t have an established network. It felt isolating at times, but I learned to put myself out there—attending local events, connecting with people online, and staying curious about my new environment. These small steps led to new friendships, opportunities, and ideas that continue to inspire me.

I also believe in the power of sharing your story. Whether it’s through conversations, social media, or collaborations, opening up about your challenges, your vision, and your work allows others to connect with you on a deeper level. I’ve found that when you’re honest and passionate about what you do, the right people naturally gravitate toward you—people who want to support, guide, or collaborate.

Lastly, never underestimate the value of persistence. If you admire someone’s work, reach out to them with a genuine message, ask thoughtful questions, or offer something of value in return. Many successful relationships are built on kindness, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from others.

Networking, to me, isn’t about climbing a ladder—it’s about building a community of like-minded people who inspire each other to grow.
