Meet Sierra Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Mitchell.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I feel like I’ve always loved fashion. My mom started teaching me to sew when I was pretty young, she’s very talented in sewing and design as well, but she’d never say so herself lol. Both of my parents are creative; actually, my dad is a hell of a musician… so this creativity is in the family.

My education is Associate of Applied Science in Fashion Design Technology from California Design College and Bachelor of Science in Fashion Marketing and Management from AI Pittsburgh online division. I have been working in the fashion industry as a technical designer for many years and was also a costume designer as well.

This venture into my own brand/collection really just out of a perfect storm of talent when my friend, photographer Cindy Quick invited me to do an editorial shoot with her. Those images lead to Fashion Week San Diego, DC Fashion Week, and so many other events.

Please tell us about your art.
I make clothing, whatever the fabric wants to be real. I never sketch anything, so I buy whatever fabric I love and work with it until it turns into something. When I work, I think about the person who might wear it and how they might feel when they wear it, that I think is something that makes my collection glamorous yet relatable.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge is knocking down your own boundaries. We are quick to say that someone or something else is holding us back when really, it is ourselves. Tear down your wall, replace your ego with humility, and do the work. You will be tired, you will get frustrated, you will get discouraged, but if you love it, you will pursue it.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
This year I showed collections at Fashion Week San Diego and DC Fashion Week and am planning to join them both again for 2019.
