Today we’d like to introduce you to Sima Ross.
Sima, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally from Iran, Shiraz and migrated to the United States in 1978. I am married to Steven Ross and am a mother of Justin, Jason and Melanie Ross.
When I am not in the courtroom interpreting for the Department of Justice or at a clinic or a hospital interpreting for a patient from the English Language to Farsi and visa versa. I am in the kitchen having fun. Interpreting is what I am good at, Catering is what my passion lies. I am totally in my element when I am organizing an event from the menu to all the different details of the event. When I accept a catering job, the client becomes my guest. It is as if they are coming to my house and they will be wined and dined like a guest because we will handle all the details of their event for them. My goal becomes to create an unforgettable experience not only for them but also for their guests.
My career as a caterer started once we moved to San Diego in 2004. Prior to that My passion was to use my cooking and entertaining talents to raise funds for the Kid’s school, Minneapolis, Jewish Day school, as well as Hadassah organization, which is a Jewish woman organization. We did that for 11 years prior to coming to San Diego. In 2007, we had a fundraising event for Beth Am synagogue in Del Mar and shortly after that, I joined the synagogue’s preferred catering list. Since then I am currently on the preferred catering lists of many synagogues in the San Diego area.
Has it been a smooth road?
My vision to have my own catering company was extremely fulfilling. Before long, all the necessary components needed to establish that dream come together quite seamlessly. I would say that learning the business aspect of catering was a bit challenging and it was learning as the business grew.
Looking back, all the challenges I encountered had wonderful lessons and a tremendous amount of growth in them. I am grateful for every one of them. They all helped me to relate to and manage my staff and create a very successful and enjoyable event for our clients.
Beside tremendous growth, all the challenges I encountered, had an element of mindfulness and gratitude in them. I feel like I catered my way to higher awareness and spirituality.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are the only Kosher, Persian/ Mediterranean caterer locally in the San Diego area. We specialize in Persian and Mediterranean cuisines. We are known for Delicious food with a smile. Our business runs on repeat clients as well as word of mouth. When a native middle eastern or Persian guest complements us on the quality and tastes of the foods, we take it as the highest form of complement.
What sets us apart from other catering companies and what we are known for, is the fact that not only quality but also presentation is quite important to us.
It does not cost us any more to make the food delicious with love and serve it with a smile. Amazingly enough, the clients and their guests feel the love and the attention that has been given to every event.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel that any place is a great place if the business comes from the place of honesty, love, devotion and fills a need. If a person is just starting any business, I would just tell them to follow their passion, do what they love and be their best at it. The rest will be lined up for them.
I think that articles such as this regarding the small businesses in San Diego are crucial to getting the word out. A lot of small businesses such as ours are truly best kept hidden secrets.
