Today we’d like to introduce you to Siobhán Wilcox.
Siobhán, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m originally from Dublin, Ireland and in 1995, I started my own corporate training company – SMPG Training & Consultancy; supporting non-profits and their communities as well as large corporations with personal development & stress management programs and coaching. This was a highly successful business and I had the pleasure of supporting many top businesses and their lead executives.
My passion for this work actually started because I needed to heal myself from executive stress burnout two years prior to this. Along with this path of recovery, I discovered I had a gift to not only heal myself but to also support others going through high levels of stress in many different parts of their lives. During these early years of building my business, I worked with special needs non-profits working with care-workers and staff and I started to see the miracles that simple techniques can have not only on the carers but also on the children being cared for.
Little did I realize that years later I would be walking a similar path as the mom of two beautiful boys, one with special needs- autism spectrum disorder and multiple other challenges from clinical depression to apraxia of speech and the other with type-one diabetes. The insights that I have built with over two decades of working in the industry of well-being lead me to write my book – “Thrive Now Blueprint – Self-Care and Success Strategies for Parents of Special Needs Children”. The staff that worked with my eldest son who knew how challenging he was kept asking me – how do you stay so calm, how do you survive this, how are you looking so relaxed, you act very differently from the parents of our other students, whats your secret?
So, I went on a mission to support my fellow – SPECIAL PARENTS!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Parenting a Special Needs Child is never smooth. There are multiple challenges every day from negotiating the education and healthcare system to accessing support, to managing behavior and mental health issues, however, there are also massive rewards too. You find gratitude for the smallest successes. This is what I reflect parents when we work together.
I help them discover tools and techniques that are easy to use and assimilate into their daily lives. I help them “RE-DREAM”, a term I coined and dedicate a chapter in my book – Thrive Now Blueprint.
When my son was first diagnosed on the autism spectrum I found myself unable to stop crying. I was highly confused and as a supposed expert in personal development, if I couldn’t figure it out I felt others didn’t stand a chance either. After sitting with myself for a long time I realized I was grieving – but what was I grieving? Going deeper within I started to grasp images of my projections – my child graduating from MIT, my son’s wedding, my grandkids etc. Now, it started to make sense – I was grieving the loss of my dream for him and us together. It wasn’t that we still couldn’t have a magnificent life together, but I needed to adjust my expectations, my visions of what that would look like so I wouldn’t constantly be disappointed.
Upon researching my book, I interviewed many parents along the special needs path and discovered that this need to ‘RE-DREAM’ is universal and that it can happen at many different times during the life of parenting not just when the diagnosis first arrives. It can occur when major milestones aren’t met: Prom night, 4.0GPA, College acceptance, etc.
