Meet Skyler Giovinozzo of Gia’s Grub in Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyler Giovinozzo.

Skyler, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My dog, Gia, came into my life when she was just a five-week-old puppy. I knew she was special, but I could never have anticipated how she would change my life.

In 2013, when Gia was one year old, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that affected every function of her body. There was very little medically that could be done, so being an effortlessly committed dog mom, I began the exploration of feeding whole food ingredients that would decrease inflammation and increase energy levels to provide her with the best quality of life.

The results were instantly visible. Gia was able to not only walk again but run fast and playful, her coat was very shiny, her water intake naturally decreased because of the water content from her food that hydrated her cells and we were able to spend an additional five years together! It became evident that “food is healthcare and medicine is sick care”. In order to carry on her legacy and to help dogs everywhere, I created Gia’s Grub—a meal prep service for dogs, making dog food and treats.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business from scratch is no easy task. Some struggles I’ve had to face included things such as properly balancing homemade diets and creating a name and logo which would represent my vision exactly.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Gia’s Grub – what should we know?
Gia’s Grub is a meal prep service for dogs based out of Ocean Beach. These homemade recipes are created with gently cooked, quality, human-grade ingredients, with love sprinkled throughout! My dog Gia, who lived a happy yet brief life because of chronic disease, ended up thriving several years longer than expected, primarily from eating gently cooked whole food ingredients. My experience with Gia became the catalyst for my mission to promote awareness that “food is health care”.

The benefits that come from feeding your dog unprocessed, lightly cooked food are significant. To name a few, it improves the immune system, nerve function, and coat shine. It increases energy levels and is a disease preventative amongst countless other benefits.

How does it work? I cook and pre-portion customized recipes based on your dog’s specific needs. Then, you choose your preferred subscription method and the food is delivered to your front door. From the fridge to the bowl, feeding Fido is as easy as that with Gia’s Grub. I make whole food treats like the Whole Grain Oat, Peanut Butter and Pumpkin recipe. They’re a healthy and tasty way to reward or spoil your pup.

As a company, I am most proud of supplying an honest product that is as healthy for dogs as it is for humans. I believe that through feeding human-grade food and treats, the quality of life and wellness will improve for this species one dog at a time. Gia’s Grub was named after Gia’s food that I made for her for several years. I put as much love and attention into every detail as if it were for Gia, herself. I make feeding a fresh food diet easy and convenient by taking care of all the hassle for dog owners and I further this convenience by providing free delivery in the city of San Diego for both food and treats.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Tenacity and the passion to educate on nutrition and wellness is most important to the success of Gia’s Grub.
