Today we’d like to introduce you to Sloane Wormser.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a young girl, I always wanted to be a hairstylist but didn’t think it was an option for me. I was raised in the North East by two highly educated and successful parents, so I put a pressure on myself to go to college right after high school and get a degree. My goal was to be a pediatric nurse, but at the age of 18, I was not in the right head space to go college. High school was very difficult for me because my family moved from small-town Massachusetts to Irvine California when I was 16 and the last thing I wanted to do was jump right into more school.
After almost 2 years at Community College, I knew I needed a change. I wanted to do something that could make me money while being creative and social, so what better than becoming a hairstylist?! After talking to my parents and getting their full support, I enrolled at Paul Mitchell the School in Costa Mesa and my life has only improved since then!! I have worked at salons in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Maryland, choosing a more challenging salon each time, I have been able to grow my career through saying yes to every opportunity and constantly pushing myself to go to the next level.
Has it been a smooth road?
I would certainly not call my career smooth but it all happened exactly the way it was suppose to in order to prepare me for this past year at my dream salon where I have been able to use all of my previous knowledge to create the most killer business in my dream space. I would say my biggest challenge has been not staying in 1 place for very long.
I have moved many times which is such a gift of this job (you are able to move anywhere) however you have to re-build a clientele every time you move. So I have “started over” many times, but each salon has been much different than the previous so I was able to have some of the most incredible learning and growing experiences.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Raven and Sage Collective story. Tell us more about the business.
I refer to myself as a “Blonding Specialist”. Specifically focusing on what I call the “Color Melt” which is literally a melt of color from a more natural root, faded into a lighter color on the ends. This kind of color allows my clients to wait 2-6 months between their color appointments. It is typically a more expensive service because the technique takes a bit more skill than your typical highlight, plus it is so much less maintenance. That is also my favorite technique so I post more photos on Instagram to attract the clientele that would ask for that.
Raven and Sage as a salon is by far my favorite place I have ever worked. You can literally feel a different frequency when you walk in. The owner, Andie Jones, has done the most incredible job of creating a space that we all love so much. Every stylist is happy to be there every single day and our clients can feel it. It is so beautiful, light, bright, clean, and welcoming.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry has already exploded in the last few years due to social media. Specifically, Pinterest and Instagram have not only made it easier for stylists exposure, it allows clients to get really excited about their hair. We are no longer looking through “Look-books” at the salon, people are coming in with 1-5 photos of hair inspiration.
The hair stylist also has a lot more respect than ever. We are a much bigger part of our communities and our clients live. I believe our industry is only going to continue exploding and changing every day. Our industry is all about shifts and changes in trends so I look forward to seeing what is to come!
