Today, we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Spears.
Hi Stephanie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My martial arts journey began at the age of 15 when I got it into my head that I was going to be a professional kickboxer lol.
My passion for martial arts continued, and at the same time, I had an interest in business as well. I went to SDSU for my business degree while continuing to train and compete in different styles of martial arts. After working as an instructor for several years and learning the ropes of running a martial arts school, I realized I wanted to branch out on my own and run my own business.
Initially, I had planned to move back to my hometown in Northern California to start a school, but an opportunity arose in Poway, and I was able to acquire a pre-existing martial arts gym instead. That gym is now 7 Spears Martial Arts Academy, and it’s been going strong since 2018, with a second location opening up in 2022.
We currently teach three different disciplines: Muay Thai, Tang Soo Do, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
NO! COVID presented a big challenge for us as for most small businesses.
But, as in martial arts training, the struggles make you stronger, and 7 Spears has not only survived but has been able to thrive thanks to the good Lord! Challenges allow you to grow and innovate and the business is better for it.
We’ve been impressed with 7 Spears Martial Arts, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
At 7 Spears, the focus is on teaching excellent martial arts skills while developing character and leadership. We teach children as young as four up to adults and pride ourselves on the friendly, family-oriented environment we’ve created. At 7 Spears, we’ve fostered a community where students and families support one another and enjoy getting to train together.
Additionally, we focus on constant and never-ending improvement. My philosophy is that no matter how long you’ve been training, there is always something to improve and some way to be better, both physically and mentally. Martial arts is a never-ending journey of both physical skill and character development for students at any age. We teach our students to apply this philosophy in all areas of their lives.
I love seeing students thrive in our program! I love that through martial arts, we’re able to teach valuable qualities like perseverance, discipline, humility, respect, leadership, and so on. Character development is a huge part of what we do, and it carries over into all areas of students’ lives.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
My team and my students. Developing them and seeing them grow is the best part of my job.
