Today we’d like to introduce you to Stirling Gill.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Thankfully, for me, I was always encouraged to pursue art. From a young age, I received many tools to create with from art kits with markers and crayons and paints, to a miniature piano. I played in a band for about ten years from elementary school to high school and used that as my creative outlet for most of that time. Eventually, as I grew my artistic interest changed and I began pursuing makeup as my creative outlet, which eventually led me to a career as a makeup artist.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a makeup artist, and I create faces. For me, makeup is about presenting the version of yourself that you are comfortable with the world seeing. Sometimes, that means shaving your brows and having crazy blown out eyeshadow, and for others, it means a touch of concealer and some brow gel. At the end of the day, what is important is that you are happy with what you have created on your face and that you are showing the world your best self.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I think the biggest challenge for artists today is over saturation. Everybody should be allowed to create art, but not everybody is creating art for the correct reasons. This is a large problem in the makeup industry as so many people claim to be a makeup artist, but have no respect for the craft as an art form. They believe that they can replicate the same face on everyone, but that takes away the artistic aspect of it. It doesn’t take much to replicate something, but when you create something new, it requires your creative juices to flow.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen in multiple places. My website holds almost all of the work that I’ve done, on there people can find a multitude of photo shoots as well as fashion shows and a music video. On my Instagram, I post my work as well as more about what I do on a daily basis. For myself, as with all artist, the best way to support me is to share my work. Exposure doesn’t pay the bills, but it does give the possibility of someone who likes my work to get ahold of me and hopefully book me.
