Today we’d like to introduce you to Suhyeon Bae.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am an illustrator currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up in two vastly different environments, Korea and San Diego has confused me all along, but I have learned to use it to develop an unconventional and confusingly broad perspective on life. I have been drawing since a very young age, and enjoy doing a lot of community service using this skill, which I am looking forward to continuing.
Please tell us about your art.
I try to draw a lot of girl’s narrative in my art! I have always been complaining about the dominance of main characters in game being male, such as Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, and so on. Female character is always the princess being rescued. So in my artwork, all the girls are running wild; surviving a zombie apocalypse, reprogramming an old drone, jumping over buildings, and vandalizing subway. I want people to feel the energy from my artwork. I want girls to look at my artwork and ignore the pressure about the ideal womanhood media may impose.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I define success as being able to produce a work for other people that also satisfies me. Fulfilling both requirements would make me truly happy while making art, which I believe is a successful career.
I believe persistence and an aspiration to grow and learn more are essential to success as an artist.
