Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Williams.
Hi Summer , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Rap A Tap opened for business in September 2015. Through my combined passion for Dance Education and Business, I created Rap A Tap. What started as a small program in a rented room inside a church, greatly expanded. It moved locations, endured a pandemic, and eventually landed in our new home. As of January 2025, we now reside in Clairemont Mesa in our newly leased location with 200 happy dancing customers. It has been an incredible journey, paved with love, support, hard work, and yes, many sleepless nights, but the community we have built is worth it all.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Have you ever heard the phrase “growing pains”? Well, that is a perfect explanation of business expansion! As our business grew, so did our need for more space, staff, and resources. Moving into our new location has been the biggest blessing, but I don’t think we understood how much work it would be. From paperwork to insurance, painting, drilling, organizing, advertising… the list goes on. I literally remember being at the business on Christmas Eve painting, because it had to be done before going to visit my family. My family and I have poured so much into the success of Rap A Tap.
But the thing that keeps us going is our community. Our Rap A Tap families go hard! When it comes to showing support they “lock in”! Yeah, I said it. They show up to help whenever, and however they can. They are painting with us, drilling with us, heat treating, and hammering with us. We could not have done it without our village, and the collective pride we felt during our December 2024 Grand Opening said it all. We did it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Rap A Tap Center for The Arts is a place where every person can enjoy dance. It is dedicated to inspiring the dancer inside of each individual. Classes are offered for ages 18months – Adult in a variety of styles including Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Contemporary, Acro, and Musical Theater. We have a performance team, a pre-professional Tap Company, and are also co-hosts to many San Diego dance events including National Tap Dance Day and San Diego Jazz and Tap Festival.
There is something for everyone at Rap A Tap. And we pride ourselves on the supportive and encouraging culture we cultivate in our space. Training great dancers on and off the dance floor. We want to train great dancers, but most importantly, we want to train good human beings who will have a confidence and humbleness about them that can be attributed to the atmosphere and the attitude we create with the students in our program.
How do you define success?
I see success as having joy in what you have, where you are, and with the people who are around you.
And not just happiness, because being happy can be circumstantial. I’m talking about an intrinsic joy that no one has the power to control but you. When you tap into that, you can find success in everything.
