Meet Susie St John of embrio DESIGN STUDIO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susie St John.

Susie St John

Hi Susie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
At a wee age, I wanted to be a librarian. Libraries are fancy. Enchanting. And smell of greatness. In my elementary days, I created the Dewey Decimal System within my own book collection. I loved all things organized. My need for cataloging books subsided. But my love for libraries stayed. Whatever will I do with that love?

Fast forward to today. I’m an interior designer of private libraries, fancy kitchens, enchanting home offices & smelly bathrooms of greatness! But I still love the smell of old stinky books.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Was the road smooth? Nope. And I’m thankful for that. Dyslexia, learning disabilities & other challenges taught me perseverance. No time for friends with so much extra-schooling to not fall too far behind. That social isolation & sadness was fierce. Thank goodness to two educators who took in interest in me & my mom who was my cheerleader in my inner world of struggles.

I pushed thru the frustrations, the failures, the sadness. I went on to college. San Francisco State University. I grew stronger. Emotionally. Scholastically. I won competitions. I held positions in organizations. I had multiple internships. I graduated Cum laude. Made it on the deans list. I persevered. My adversity didn’t hold me back. It groomed me for success. To push on. To get back up. To find the positive. To keep trying. To apply to that big architecture design firm. To do the extra work. To push beyond my comfort zone. To start an interior design studio of my own. To be happy. To spread happiness. To spread success. Adversity made me strong.

As you know, we’re big fans of embrio DESIGN STUDIO. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My goal is to spread happiness & success to others by designing homes that will make you feel like the BEST YOU! Design homes with affordable REMARKABLE SPACES that will make life better! Design homes that are MADE TO LAST rather than be replaced!

I design homes with functionality in mind 1st. Aesthetics 2nd. My aesthetic style is called hygge (who-guh). A Scandinavian philosophy that’s about cozy + clean lines. Anyone can make a space look good, but will it last?

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Olde Carlsbad is where I call home. It’s walk-able. Accessible. Friendly. Safe. Cute.

Every weekend, my husband, son & I bike to the village to breakfast for pressed panini sandwiches at French Corner Cafe or to Oceanside for Parlor Doughnuts. I even walk my dogs to their veterinarian in the village. Did I mention Olde Carlsbad is chicken friendly, bike friendly, dog friendly with lots of avocado trees, fruit trees & a giant star pine tree with a star on top that somehow is always lite for the holidays.

I do wish we had more big trees. Lot’s of them. I am a forest girl.
