Today we’d like to introduce you to Swetha Janamanchi.
Swetha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photography is not a hobby or a Job; It’s a passion. I always had a love for photography. After completing my MBA in India, I wanted to start a business but didn’t know which one. I never had an interest in getting into regular jobs and got lucky with not having high pressure on getting a job as soon as possible and support the family which allowed me to explore my interests.
I like the art of any kind. Always had great respect for people who does artwork. I joined screen printing classes, which I enjoyed a lot during the course. As a hobby, I designed interiors for my friends & family. I enjoyed both areas so much, especially getting the right colors for the right mood. Before my wedding, I asked my husband to get a DSLR, and we explored taking quality pictures for the first time. When we were getting our post-wedding photoshoot, I interacted with our photographers to find more information on the courses they took, the training they had, editing software they use. Then I started to edit the pictures and began to notice that I was delighted while doing it. Later, I attended a few photography workshops in India to check out if this is where I belong? Eureka! I found myself. I loved the experience so much, and from that night, all my dreams were filled with photography. There is no look back after that moment. I took courses to learn professional photography and did several collaborated photo shoots in San Diego.
I started off covering lots of events for free across San Diego. I have been working towards diversifying my portfolio. My Friends & Family supported me throughout the process to get where I am right now.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For me, getting clients was the biggest challenge at the beginning. Being an introvert, I felt it’s difficult to reach out to people. I started to calibrate myself, used social media marketing, covered many free photoshoots. During this, I began to interact with people, socialize, make friends, and the journey went on. Another challenge is managing time. Being a mom of an adorable three year old, it was hard to balance time between family and the business.
Tell us more about the business.
I believe that a good photographer should be able to photograph anything around them and let people see the world with their images. My goal is to not only take wonderful images but also to create a fun and memorable experience. SJPhotography is into portrait photography, events and kid’s photography.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so –who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
My husband has been such a huge support to me. He is the pillar of my success, whom I always look up to. He is the one who encouraged me to live my dreams and always stood by my side and believed in me and, of course, sponsored the best and latest equipment. My family is delighted with where I am today, and I would like to thank all my family members, it wouldn’t have been possible without their support.
